Which had a greater impact on the start of the Second World War?

* The Treaty Of Versailles

* Chamberlains Policy of Appeasement

After the First World War moods in Europe weren't very happy as the majority of countries were left damaged by the scale of the war. Germany was forced to surrender therefore for victory was achieved for the French and British. After the Great War a settlement was made which was The Treaty of Versailles which was aimed at Germany, some critics say that it was very severe and harsh towards Germany as they were left segregated and weak without any power, the treaty had dented Germany which all of the European countries wanted.

This treaty was the only way to stop Germany and most people in Britain and France wanted revenge. Germany lost most of its empire and was now called Mandates as they were now run by the LON. They also forced to pay £6.6 billion in reparations for the damaged it caused.

When the treaty was put into action no one new how it would affect the future of Europe in a drastic way when Adolph Hitler would come into action. He wanted to reverse the results of Treaty of Versailles and put Germany back on the map. However the British prime Minster tried to appease him and give him what he wanted like land and an army but this still didn't work and Germany grew bigger and stronger until it leaded to the Second World War.

Freidriek Ebert the president of the Weimar government signed the Treaty of Versailles which was seen as a dictated peace by fellow Germans, this made him very unpopular wit the Germans. Due to the Treaty Germany was forced to sign a 'War Guilt' clause were the Germans had to accept total responsibility for starting the war and the destruction and damage caused. This angered Germans as they were blamed for the war and they had to take all the responsibility, this also infuriated the German authorities. Also as they started the war they had to agree to pay reparation which set at £6.6 billion for the damage caused during the war, this was decided in 1921 but was changed later, it would take Germany until the 1980s to pay. Many Germans resented this as Germany was not given the chance to influence the terms or have a say. Also they were bitter about accepting responsibility for the war as they didn't believe the blame should go to them as war was going occur anyway, the Germans thought that Franz Ferdinand's assassination was the main reason to why the war started so they couldn't be blamed.

After the Treaty was put into action Hitler came along, he was a very good speaker and he could manipulate people very well he toured round Germany and told Germans that they shouldn't follow the terms of the treaty. Soon he grew in power and the Nazi party was born and in 1921 Adolf Hitler became the leader of it, his party grew in power and in members. Hitler wanted revenge and he wanted to overturn the clauses of the treaty as Germany was made to suffer in many different ways.
