This essay will discuss how two of Banksy’s most popular works have been shown in a critical and/or enlightening way.

With one hand grasping a ladder and the other rattling a can of spray paint, Banksy, the anonymous British street artist has had a profound global effect with his artwork. His typical medium is stencil and spray paint, which are used to convey contemporary political, social and environmental issues. Banksy’s art engages with his extensive range of audiences in both a critical and enlightening way around the recurring themes of consumerism, inequality, conflict and an ironic representation of peace. In relation to this, the two images to be discussed are Rickshaw and Armored Dove. Rickshaw is a life-sized painting depicting an obese couple taking a photo of themselves while being towed on a rickshaw by a slight boy from a third world country. It portrays the themes of consumerism and inequality. Armored Dove features a dove with an olive branch in its beak and wearing a bulletproof vest with sniper target over its heart. This image is stenciled in Palestine and it conveys the themes of conflict and an ironic representation of peace. This essay will discuss how each image has used the visual techniques of juxtapositioning and symbolism to render the images in a critical or enlightening manner. It will also discuss how context and my readings of each image has shaped my understanding of Banksy’s intentions in regard to his art.

Banksy’s Rickshaw has engaged with a social issue, namely inequality, in a critical way through juxtapositioning. Banksy has juxtaposed a small boy with an obese couple of Westerners. He is being critical of the inequality between first and third world countries. The size of the characters shows inequality, as the two Westerners are enormous in comparison to the small boy, yet he is still made to haul them around on the rickshaw. This shows inequality, as it is a naturalised assumption that large people are more powerful than small people. Inequality is also shown as the overweight couple is shown in colour, whereas the boy is shown in black and white. This is a representation of the dissimilar lives the characters lead. The obese couple lead a vibrant, colourful and exciting life, whereas the boy leads a dull and simplistic life. This again shows inequality in the characters’ lives. Another example of how Banksy has been shown to be critical of the inequality between characters is that the obese people are shaded by an umbrella and are comfortably seated. This can be compared to the boy who is wearing a tiny hat and has no shoes on. This juxtaposes the suffering and discomfort of the boy with the luxury and comfort of the couple and also presents the Westerners as insensitive to the child’s pain. This is a scathing portrayal of class distinction in Rickshaw as the boy is placed in a subordinate social stratum in comparison to the obese couple. All of these points show how Banksy has critically shown inequality in the painting Rickshaw, as he places the boy in a less powerful position than the obese couple.

Banksy’s intent and my response to Rickshaw have brought new meaning to my understanding of this painting. I believe Banksy’s intent with regard to the painting Rickshaw is to contrast the developed and undeveloped worlds. He has aimed to highlight how lifestyles differ and how first world citizens take their relative fortune as a right, not a privilege. The small boy supports the image of the third world sufferers, and the obese couple represents the first world populations. Banksy has shown the obese couple taking a photo of themselves as a illustration of the self obsession that a lot of the ...
