An alternative approach to quality control and quality assurance for Low and Bonar could be to operate a quality circles system. A small voluntary group of workers between 6-8 people in the same area of production would meet regularly to study and solve production problems. They receive training so that they are able to work to the best of their ability. A leader who is called a Consensus, generally a employee from management is responsible for making decisions and often decide upon how to approach problems. A set of rules are established to ensure that the style of Total Quality Management works to its potential.

The objectives of a quality circle system are to

  • Continually improve and maintain the quality of products, services and jobs.
  • To bring self-development and mutual development of the low level employees by developing their capability to reach self-actualisation.
  • To make workplace better and with full of brightness for employees and customers.
  • To enable employees to perform on their own thereby increasing the customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction comes by a high quality product at a lower cost, free from defects, timely delivery and prompt service.

A quality circle system would be a small cost for Low and Bonar to incorporate as the system can easily be financed from department budgets. By incorporating this system they may be able to cut costs of other TQM systems.
