With reference to an area, would the opening of a new fast food restaurant (or other business ) represent a sound business decision

Introduction

For this piece of coursework I am going to see whether the opening of a new business which serves the passenger community area will represent a sound and profitable business decision.

As my business will be located at either Heathrow, Gatwick or Stanstead airport I will have to go there and carry out some research. Once I have done this, I will assess the feasibility of the business in the light of the sort of people who are its main potential source of income. Furthermore I will also estimate and find out the amount of likely customers, transport links, the availability of parking if relevant and the capability of the environment to support my proposition. Once these observations have been carried out, I will look for a suitable premises as to which I feel will be a good position for me and the venture and then justify my reasons as to choosing 1 premises over the other 2.

The type of business venture that I have proposed to set up is a cyber store called ‘Ve – store’ which is run by Virgin. The reason as to why I have chosen to call my business and have it run by Virgin is because Virgin has an excellent reputation for being innovative. Virgin also specifically aim to maintain the perception of being a customer oriented organisation within the consumer market. In order to uphold this perception, the idea behind Ve store is basically based on a high tech café including many aspects of the Virgin megastore such as music, movies, magazines and books as an all-in-one cyber store. My business will offer the following to its customers:

  • A lounging area where customers can sit on sofas while having a bite to eat and socialising
  • An eating area where customers can order something to eat and drink
  • A café area where customers can purchase food such as muffins, chocolates etc.
  • An area based on all Virgin megastore aspects such as music, movies, magazines and books.
  • State of the art internet access
  • Music booths where music lovers will have a choice of selecting top of the chart music to listen to via headphones
  • A till area where customers can purchase any products they wish to
  • And of course toilet facilities

The atmosphere in the shop itself will be exciting and friendly with up to date music playing in the background. The Ve store will provide a friendly service and will cater for all the needs and age ranges of customers.

Music

A music selection utilising the latest in MP3 technology will allow my clients to access the contents of the latest music releases from the Virgin Record Listening Post direct from their desktops. The ability of listening to the latest music via headphones while my prospective customers browse which is regularly updated and is in sparkling MP3 form will assist in generating sales for the music section of the Ve store.

Web Cams

Each of my Ve store P.C’s could have a web cam that allows customers to take a picture or record a video message and send it via e - mail to a friend.

Project Aim: Objective 1

The aim of this coursework is to evaluate the opportunities and problems facing a new business, whether it will be a sound and profitable business and what its chances are of success in the long term. To do this, I will have to research and gather detailed accounts of information from various sources and investigate the airports. As my business will be situated in a major airport I can only investigate the following:

  • The average social classes of people who pass through the terminal per day
  • The levels of crime in the area
  • The population of the area
  • The average income of people who pass through

Objective 2 aims:

For objective 2, I will have to find out about demand using market research – the different methods of it, sampling. I will also have to mention the importance of market research, look at the social trends through the usage of upmystreet.com, and devise a questionnaire to assess the level of demand for my business idea. After I have carried out a questionnaire I will analyse each question.

Objective 3 aims:

For objective 3, I will have to examine the locational factors affecting a business. I will in general be talking about the access to transport, what is needed for a business to be successful, what suppliers are available in the surrounding area, and what external influences on business activity are occurring in the airport.

It will also be a good and a reasonable idea to have 3 premises and compare them in terms of size, cost, facilities and the location of them in relation with other businesses in the surrounding area of the terminal. It will also be beneficial and advisable if I talk about the importance of the location of the business in relation with suppliers – how long it will take them to deliver goods to the shop.

Objective 4 aims:

For this aim I will decide upon the most suitable form of ownership and state what type of business it is going to be, whether it’ll be a specialist or a general. More importantly, I will finalise my concept by making recommendations and carrying out a self assessment questionnaire on whether my business brain and business will have the personal qualities and skills to be prosper.

Frequent bus and coach services connect Heathrow with more than 500 local and national destinations across the U.K.
