Microsoft Corporate Profile and Organizational Structure Overview

Microsoft (Nasdaq "MSFT") is the worldwide leader in software, services and Internet technologies for personal and business computing. The company offers a wide range of products and services designed to empower people through great software -- any time, any place and on any device.

Microsoft was founded as a partnership on April 4, 1975, by William H. Gates III and Paul G. Allen, and incorporated on June 25, 1981. Headquartered in Redmond, Wash., the company operates subsidiary offices in more than 60 foreign countries and employs nearly 44,000 people worldwide. Building on the popularity of the Windows operating system and the Office productivity suite, Microsoft is now focused on developing technology for the next-generation Internet. The company's .NET platform will enable businesses to collaborate to offer an unprecedented range of integrated and customized solutions -- solutions that enable their customers to act on information wherever and whenever they need it.

Microsoft's organizational structure supports the company's increased focus on software services. The company is currently structured around the following core groups:

The Personal Services Group (PSG), headed by Group Vice President Bob Muglia, focuses on making it easier for consumers and businesses to connect online and to deliver software as a service on a variety of devices. PSG encompasses Microsoft's Personal .NET initiative, the Services Platform division, the Mobility group, the MSN Internet Access and Consumer Devices group, and the User Interface Platform division.

The MSN & Personal Services Business Group, headed by Vice President Yusuf Mehdi, runs network programming, business development, and worldwide sales and marketing for MSN and Microsoft's other services efforts, including MSN eShop, MSN Carpoint, MSN HomeAdvisor, the MSNBC venture, Slate and MSNTV.

The Platforms Group, headed by Group Vice President Jim Allchin, has responsibility for continuing to evolve the Windows platform by making services -- such as storage, communication, notification, sharing photos and listening to music -- a natural extension of the Windows experience. In addition, the group includes the .NET Enterprise Server group, the Developer Tools division and the Windows Digital Media division.

The Productivity and Business Services group, headed by Group Vice President Jeff Raikes, drives Microsoft's broad vision for productivity and business process applications and services. This group leads the effort to evolve a service-based product that builds on the rich functionality and capabilities of Microsoft Office. In addition to the Office division, this group includes the Emerging Technologies group, the Business Tools division, and the Business Applications group, which includes bCentral and Great Plains.

The Worldwide Sales, Marketing and Services Group, headed by Group Vice President Orlando Ayala, integrates the activities of Microsoft's sales and service partners with the needs of Microsoft customers around the world: enterprise customers, small and medium-sized organizations, educational institutions, application developers and consumers. In addition, the group includes Microsoft Product Support Services, the Network Solutions group, the Enterprise Partner group, the Central Marketing Organization and all three of Microsoft's major business-sales regions worldwide.
