When Marion’s boss told her she can go home and put $40,000 in the bank. Marion went home there was a close up shot on the money then on the suitcase. Hitchcock is trying to tell the audience that she is running away with the money.
An example when the camera zooms out is after the shower scene. When Marion gets killed and the murdered runs out the hotel the camera zoomed in and zoomed out the newspaper, Hitchcock is trying to tell his audience that the money is still inside the newspaper.
The two extreme close ups at the end of the shower scene are the plug hole and the shower. This shot has been used to tell the audience that when the blood is going down the plug hole it indicated that Marion is losing her life when all of the blood has gone down the plug hole so is her life.
A panning shot was used at the end of the shower scene. This shot involves the camera going around Marion’s motel room after zooming away from her dead body. The audience are shown a shot of the house, out of the window and then back to the money lying on the side table insides the newspaper. This shot was done deliberately and cleverly by Hitchcock to put doubt and confusion into the mind of the audience then so they would be asking themselves why didn’t the killer take the money and run away with it?
The music helps create a tense atmosphere in the shower scene. The music had the audience scared at all times and every second going by the audience was getting nervous thinking what might happen next which creates suspense.
Another successful ingredient of a classical horror movie is the use of chilling music. Hitchcock pulls this off by using music discreetly, manipulatively, creates great tension.
Music is not used when Norman and Marion are talking, this is done deliberately by Hitchcock. It is not used because we get a chance to hear the characters talk. We also see Norman react badly for what Marion says about his mother.
When the murderer stabs Marion, each time the killer stabs Marion the music is getting faster and faster. The music also becomes lighter after the near the end of the stabbing. When Marion falls outside the bath the music is getting slower and slower and it is also getting deeper and deeper. This is when the image and the music connect.
The lighting that was used in the shower scene was used cleverly, it was used as Marion being light and the murderer being dark. The light resembles life and the dark resembles death. It also has been used to show that Marion is an symbol of light and the murderer is a symbol of evil that’s why he is so dark. Marion has got lighting around her because some of the audience could see something is going to happen to her.
