Analyse and comment on the differences and similarities of the ways in which the two movie versions of "of mice and men" portray the events and characters.

"Of Mice And Men" Media Coursework By Bernard Prelec Analyse and comment on the differences and similarities of the ways in which the two movie versions of "of mice and men" portray the events and characters. When we watch a film we are caught up in the story that it is telling and accept everything that happens on the screen as natural. In fact everything that we see has been carefully chosen and edited on the screen and within the actual storyline to have an effect on the watching audience. The camera is moved and people and objects are positioned in the frame; what people wear is carefully chosen and the settings are selected and prepared. Because of our experiences of films seen at the cinema or on television we have some expectations about what happens in the film, we expect to know what happens next, we expect a climax and an ending. The filmmaker also shapes what we think is going to happen by the opening sequence. The filmmaker has a number of ways to help the film such as costumes lighting cameras and props the audiences position in the film will depend on the way the filmmaker tells us the story In this assignment I am going to analyse and comment on the two movie versions of "Of mice and men". In the old film the opening sequence is the same as the novel. But because the novel lacks action an extra scene is added to the old movie. This will engage the

Of mice and men - What does the scene set in crooks's room tell us about the life on the ranch?

Maryam Marmar S10 English-Ms.Bache What does the scene set in crooks's room tell us about the life on the ranch? Crooks scene is a key point in the novel "of mice and men", as the themes that are touched upon in this scene apply to the whole novel, and we learn a lot about life on the ranch for example segregation of the black community and the isolation that is faced while working on the ranch. We come across crooks's scene towards the middle of the novel. The main characters in this scene are Lennie, Candy, Curley's wife and obviously Crooks. From the start we soon realise there is mistrust within people on the ranch. "Slim looked through George and beyond him. "Ain't many guys travel around together, " he mused, "I don't know why. Maybe every'body in the whole damn world is scared of each other." " At the beginning of the scene we get a detailed description about Crooks's room and his way of life. From the very beginning of the scene we know Crooks is a Black slave working on the ranch. " Crooks, the Negro stable buck..." (Page 66) We also know that Crooks has been on the ranch for quite some time and will be there for many years to come. "...he was more permanent then the other men, and he had accumulated more possessions than he could carry on his back."(Page 66) we also know he is crippled, "His body was bent over to the left because of his crooked spine..."

Creative writing about George and Lennie.

Stumbling through the wet grass the two came frantically running, looking behind them at every few strides, breathing hard, disturbing the green grass and disrupting the harmony of the birds sitting in trees chirping and whistling the final songs of the day, while dogs barked and people shouted far behind them. A voice could be heard shouting above the crowd "They're headed for the fields, com'on!" George grumbled, breathing frantically "Damnit!... com'on you crazy bastard, they near got us!" "I'm trying George, I swear but I's tired" Lennie wheezed The two were passing fields, when they came to an irrigation ditch, George thought about it and he pulled lennie into the ditch with him. "Get your head down!" George shouted but lennie didn't do a thing, George annoyed, shoved him under the murky water, they could hear the shouts getting closer and the dogs growling. A man said "Where the hell did they get to?" another close to him said "The dog's ave lost the scent they musta went thru that ditch and off into the woods, no way we could get them now" "Damn...... ok everyone back to the town for a head count then we can all go home, its getting late" With these words saw George give a sigh of relief as he gently surfaced bringing lennie with him, George taking his hat began to wring out the water, lennie copying his movements did the same, George set his crease and made

Of Mice and Men Chapter 7 - original writting.

Of Mice and Men Chapter 7 The sun was low. The sky seemed dull and the trees swayed in the brisk wind, and the leaves rustled. The sound of whistles seemed to echo through the hills and the Gabilan Mountains now looked cold and frightening. The rabbits were burrowing and hiding underground for the night to come. George trundled along the road, accompanied by Slim, rather slowly with past memories going through his mind. Slim finally broke the silence, "You were right to do it George, don't worry." George slowly mumbled a reply, "Mm... Yea..." "Come on lad, we'll go back to the ranch and settle down and we can have a drink of whisky or sumin' before work in the morning." "Yea..." George mumbled again. They got back to the ranch, late into the darkening night and walked steadily through the swinging doors. Slim and George both took off their jackets and placed them on the wall. George sat down at a table whilst Slim went behind the bar to make them both a drink. He settled down gradually next to George and calmly passed him his drink. "Thanks..." George murmured. Slim went to speak, "So, are..." All of a sudden, before Slim could finish his sentence, there were loud crashing noises outside. They both sharply got up and as they moved closer, the sound of gun shots could be heard. Both George and Slim, quickly moved to the door but Slim ushered George inside whilst

Explore the theme of loneliness in John Steinbecks ‘Of Mice and Men’.

Explore the theme of loneliness in John Steinbecks 'Of Mice and Men'. In this essay, I'm going to express my exploration into a piece of writing. I was exploring the theme of loneliness in John Steinbecks 'Of Mice and Men'. In this essay I will talk about main characters loneliness and how it's created. 'Loneliness' is the word that I'm going to focus in this essay. Loneliness is describing a feeling that was lonely and empty with love of friendships. Loneliness can be measure in the quality of friendship and relationship. Loneliness is created with lots of different factors; it can be created with the atmosphere of living, environment and historical content. John Steinbecks has set up the story line well as he explained the caused of the loneliness that most of the worker had; he included a little background of Lennie. In Of Mice and Men, the main characters that were focused to be lonely were George and Lennie, Candy, Crooks, Curley's wife, Curley, Carlson and whit. Most of these characters were lonely because of the poor friendship that they had with living in the ranch. The ranch was in a really bad condition and this didn't help to create the environment of living. I think the environment does affect the style of living. In this paragraph I'm going to write about George and Lennie. George and Lennie were described as a couple of good friends as they

How is George and Martha's relationship depicted dramatically up to page 48 of Act 1?

How is George and Martha's relationship depicted dramatically up to page 48 of Act 1? The very title of Edward Albee's 'Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?' has immediate connotations as to the relationship between the two main characters of the play, George and Martha. The well known nursery rhyme in fact goes, 'Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?' As we find out in further reading of the play, the 'big bad wolf' is obviously supposed to be seen as Martha, and the victim is George, her long suffering husband. However, in hindsight, both characters suffer just as much as each other. The title of Act one is 'Fun and Games.' This proves to be slightly ironic as the games Martha and George play, mind and verbal matches, do not seem at all fun, but appear as more of a power struggle. Apparent simple requests from Martha become games for both her and Martha to play. Martha says, 'Why don't you want to kiss me?' whereupon George replies, 'Well, dear, if I kissed you I'd get all excited...' As one critic of the play wrote, 'They (George and Martha) club each other on the head with gleeful scorn and leave huge patches of scorched earth.' Emotions from both George and Martha become integrated into an ongoing power struggle, and Martha dwells in George's anger as she likes to see the stirred up effect she has on him. As the night wears on, more alcohol is consumed and the clearer it becomes

It was a bitter winter's night and George was sitting in his big white house.

English Creative Writing Piece It was a bitter winter's night and George was sitting in his big white house. George's lapdog, Tony, was lying at his owner's feet. His big pointy ears were jiggling and his huge forehead was creasing up as he breathed in and out. George was watching television. Although he was not really mentally capable of understanding some of the intellectual humour he was watching, he happily sat there giggling away at the Tweenies with Tony. George and Tony deserved to relax after the hard day they had had at school. George was head boy at his school, the United School of Akronica, and he was having a spot of trouble with one of the other boys. Sammy Whosayne was bullying other children in his class and George thought that he should do something about it. George also believed that Sammy had some stink-bombs of mass poignancy but he could not prove anything. Although George was head boy, it did not mean he could do what he wanted; he had to speak to one of the teachers first. The teacher that he had to speak to on this occasion was called Mrs. U. Benn. She was in charge of the committee against bullying, Necessitarians Against The Oppressors. Usually, U. Benn and NATO sorted out problems between different groups within the school but this time she said no because George could not prove that Sammy had stink-bombs of mass poignancy. George was furious; he

George's first diary

Georges first diary Dear Diary, We're here now, at the ranch. Our new home, for the time being anyway, until Lennie messes up again! He's always messing up, losing us our jobs! Stay here, and save the money here instead of always being on the run. He made us lose our last job. That's why we had to leave. You see, Lennie loves soft things; he loves to stroke them and hold them. One day he saw a girl with a soft dress on. Of course, the first thing Lennie does is touch it. The girl doesn't realise how stupid he is, (and simple) and thinks he's going to rape her and she screams. Lennie, being the idiot that he is just holds on and rips the dress! So, that leads to us being chased by a lot of angry people! Now we have to start all over again. If only he weren't with me. Aw hell, I can't say that. He'd die without me. And I don't reckon I'd be doing that great without him either. Who would I have to talk to? Well anyway, on the way to the ranch, the bus driver, being a lazy bastard, wouldn't take us all the way. We didn't want to walk all night so we stayed in the brush until morning. It was just a little clearing in the woods with a stream running through it. I told Lennie that if he got in trouble he should come there. Its safe and hidden away so I could easily find him! But if it comes to that, if he messes up again. I'll kill him, I'm sure I will.

Of Mice and Men essay on Crooks character.

Grace French. 10N Of Mice and Men essay I am doing my essay on Crooks the 'Stable buck' who is black, 'the nigger'. I have chosen to do Crooks as I feel he is a defined character, different to the rest so I thought it would be interesting to go into him with more detail. He has a crooked back, hence the name Crooks, he has a crooked back as a horse kicked him when he was younger. 'Stable buck' means he tends the horses on the ranch, and this is where he sleeps. He is not allowed to sleep in the bunkhouse with the rest of the ranch workers, as they are afraid that they might catch a disease off him, so instead he has to sleep in the barn with the animals. He lives a life of solitude, being alone in the barn with no-one coming in to talk to him, 'You got no right to come in my room', 'I aint wanted in the bunkhouse and you aint wanted in here'. Among his possessions, in his room he has some books, including "a tattered dictionary and a mauled copy of the California civil code for 1905" This tells him his rights as a black man, so he obviously does not want to get on the wrong side of the law, so he keeps to his limits. Him having books suggests to us that he may have been well educated as a child. When he was young boy he lived on a smallholding with his father, so he was probably treated with a bit of respect, however, now he is just a black man working on a ranch
