I have been fascinated with science ever since my 11th grade biology teacher introduced me to the topic “Anatomy and Physiology.” That’s when I committed myself completely to becoming a physician. However until the summer of 2002 I had not developed the characteristics that I would like to have in myself to become an ideal physician. During the summer of 2002, I participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) on Medicine in U.C. Berkeley, where I was able to learn and gain a better understanding of the job and characteristics of an ideal physician.
In NYLF, I learned a broad range of topics, including educational requirements, career options, clinical practice and complex ethical and legal issues facing the medical profession today. This once-in-a-lifetime experience has provided me with the key to my future, my career goals and successes I dream of achieving. I visited many hospitals where I saw cardiac and neuro surgeries. In the program I met many physicians like Dr. Patch Adams, Dr. Elizabeth M. Mutsiya, Dr. Barbara Staggers, Dr. Kate O’ Hanlan and Dr. Ernest L. Lewis who provided me with a wide range of scientific perspectives. After talking to them, I was able to develop a clear portrait of an ideal physician which I would like to possess in myself. The characteristics that have shaped the portrait of my ideal physician include professional and humanitarian characteristics.
