Explain why the United States withdrew

Its forces from Vietnam in 1973

In 1973 the United States withdrew its forces from Vietnam after 19 years of war between the two sides. There were many different reasons for this which all interlinked and forced America out of Vietnam. America didn’t want Vietnam to become communist but Vietnam wanted its independence. War broke out in 1954 and Vietnam claimed victory in 1973 after America withdrew its forces.

After the Second World War the countries involved were devastated, the two main powers, the most powerful countries in the world were the USA and the USSR. However these two countries had conflicting ideologies. The USA was a democracy and thought people should have freedom of speech. They ran their country using capitalism. The US public were outraged and Johnson now had the excuse he needed to call up troops and bomb the North. Operation Rolling Thunder began on the 11th February 1965. Sir force officers were confident now that they could end the war even though they were not allowed to bomb Hanoi and Haipong.

The tactics the Vietcong and the US used were completely different and played a big role in forcing the Americans to withdraw their troops. The Vietnamese soldiers didn’t wear uniform and looked like ordinary peasants so it was hard for the Americans to tell which of them were peasants and which were soldiers. The American soldiers who see a Vietnamese soldier fire a shot but when they chased after them they would have diapered in a crowd of innocent Vietnamese civilians. Later on in the war the Americans began Killings innocent Vietnamese because they didn’t know if they ...
