How has James Cameron presented and adapted the true story of Titanic for the cinema?

The film Titanic directed by James Cameron is about a love affair on the largest cruise ship of its time, the RMS Titanic. Although there is fiction in the film the events which happened to the Titanic are based on fact.

It's the day of the maiden voyage of Titanic and everyone is talking about the so called 'unsinkable' ship. In the middle of the North Atlantic a love affair fire's up between an up-standing 1st class lady and a low-life entrepreneur but, this is a love of secret because Rose Dewitt Bukater is already engaged to be married to Cal. Then, unexpectedly, Titanic collides with an iceberg. Initially everything seems ok but two agonizing hours of mayhem pass, and then the ship finally sinks in the Atlantic. Out of a total of 2500 souls on board only 750 were saved from the freezing waters, and Jack Dawson, Rose's secret lover was not one of them. We also see Rose when she is 101 and she joins a young man's quest to find the 'Heart of the Ocean', a valuable and rare diamond, which was given to Rose by Cal on the night that the Titanic sunk. But Rose knows that they are on a wild goose chase, because she has had it for all of these years. One night she goes to the rear of the quest vessel and she throws the diamond into the sea to show that she is finally letting go, but she will always hold on in her heart.
