8th June 2003 Let Him Have It Essay The Film was made to make people feel sorry for Derek Bentley by making us think he’s the victim. It made people sad for him. I felt sorry for him because he didn’t deserve a death sentence and that the coppers just wanted to blame someone. They use lots of different ways to manipulate us. Manipulation means, with skill to influence by unfair means or cunning. E.g. to give a false appearance to. They manipulate us before we see it by the pictures on the front cover. There are 2 men from the film there. One is called Christopher Craig who in the picture is wearing black, looked pale. Gangster style hat, a smirk, light shiner one him holding a gun. This already makes us thinks that he is the bad guy and not to trust him and he is the cause of trouble. The other character is Derek Bentley who is smaller than Craig, Appears younger, innocent and vulnerable. He has a scared expression contrasted with Craig because the light shines on Craig. Derek looks weak a bit and also as if he is in trouble for something he didn’t do. The film is biased in some ways because Iris Bentley helped Peter Medak, the films director to make the film. She would have given her point on view of Derek. She might have made it out that Derek is the innocent one and he was pushed into doing things, because of his illness. The film also uses the effects of music, Camera Angles and clothing to manipulate us. They use slow music when Derek is having a fit. They also focus on him when he is having a fit. They Start the film off with a bombing in the World War II where u first of see people screaming and running. After a while the camera moves towards a family with Iris (has a girl) shouting Derek’s name. They stop on a pile of rubble and Derek’s dad is removing the rubble and we see Derek’s face and how he got the illness. This makes us feel sorry because it isn’t his fault he has the illness. They also focus on his face and start playing the slow music that is repeated throughout the film. We next see Derek when he is older and they are raiding a shed with his mates. You then hear someone coming in and his mates run and Derek stands there. The man Confronts Derek and shines the light in his face. At this point he has another fit and the camera then focusing on his eyes again and the music are played. This makes us feel sorry for him again and that it isn’t his fault. We then see him at a Kingswood approved school. They talk about him getting kicked out of a school. The dad is arguing with the man saying that they asked him to spell a word that he couldn’t spell. makes us feel sorry for him because it is a word that not many people could spell and they court asked a 10 year old to spell it with learning difficulties. This makes us on his side more because of the unjust he has. We then see him in room later on in life. He’s not been out in a year and got no social skills because he doesn’t meet anyone. Iris is having a conversation with him trying to push him to get out of the house for once. This makes us feel sorrier for him because we’ve seen ...
