How the Olympic ideas changed since the first modern Olympics

How the Olympic ideas changed since the first modern Olympics In the first modern held at Athens in 1896, the ultimate dream of the Olympics, finally re-created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The Olympic motto reflects the dedication of the athletes as they take part in the games. In the oath they promise to compete "in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of the sport and the honor of our teams." The Olympics were set up for people to compete for the love of their sport and not for money and sponsorship. While few qualify to participate in this international competition, many athletes 'strive to imitate the example of dedication, cooperation and enthusiasm exhibited by the competitors.' Up until 1984 the modern Olympics, was set up and held without any major sponsorship and funding, but in Los Angeles, USA 1984, it made a massive $215 000 000 profit, the first to ever make profit. Major sponsors including McDonalds, Coca Cola, Kodak and Panasonic pay millions of pounds to have their company name and logo put up around the stadium and displayed on T.V. at the most popular viewing times. "The important thing in these Olympics is not so much winning as taking part. The important thing in life is not the victory but the battle" (Baron Pierre de Coubertin, 1896.) The first Olympics saw athletes compete not for money and fame but for love of the sport, but this

My Outlook On Basketball

My Outlook On Basketball I am one of few who do not take a particular interest to many sports but basketball is one sport, which I can't seem to get enough of. Due to the Fact that I live in Southern California my personal favorite basketball team is The Los Angeles Lakers. How the can jump that high or even have enough energy to play as well as they do for that long amount of time, is beyond me. The talent each member on this team has is amazing and unreal. I cant wait till the final buzzer rings in a basketball game determining the winners and forcing the defeated to push harder to win their next game. Strength and determination I believe is extremely important in the game of basketball in that without these two key elements your performance in this sport will be shortly lived. This past Friday (as a surprise) my dad brought home tickets for my family and I to go and watch the Lakers play but I unfortunately was unable to attend due to my being apart of this year's talent show. The Game itself I believe is wonderful- two nets, one ball, two teams, and one winner. The excitement that falls over the crowd in the last minutes of a basketballs final Quarter is like none other. This excitement only builds up the curiosity of each viewer watching a game of basketball searching for the reward- the winning team. Although I am not very talented in this sport I will continue to watch

Physical Education: Synoptics : David Beckham

SYNOPTICS: David Beckham David Beckham has been playing football since a very early age. He now plays for Manchester United at an elite level and captains England. He trains and competes very regularly. .AGGRESSION Several aspects of football have progressed vastly in the last decade. Many of which are relevant to the increasing position of aggression in football today. This means that aggression is very much a part of David's sport, and an aspect that he must understand. Governing bodies and referees are now much more open and understanding about aggression in football as they have realised the increasing influence that it has in the game. The rules reflect this, as retaliation (an aggressive act) is now an automatic 'sending off' offence. This also applies to raising of the hands and any intent to harm. Rivalry between teams is also an issue. When playing a local rival obtaining points is not the players' only motive for success. The two teams aim to win as simply defeating the opposition matters more than obtaining points. However this may lead to aggressive behaviour as the player feels that the stakes are higher (pride). It is also possible and supported through theory that in games in which he feels he is under-achieving he finds himself being cautioned. This may be due to the theory that states the athletes' ability is inadequate compared to the task they are
