Report on Devising a Marketing Strategy to Attract the 50+ Age Group to Woburn Safari Park

1. Introduction

This report is being written to develop a marketing policy to attract the 50 and over age group to Woburn Safari Park. This report will tell the reader about the background of Woburn Safari Park, its aims, facilities and location, pricing, marketing, current market, competition, market research methods used, ways to change marketing to attract the 50+ age group and a conclusion.

2. Background

  1. Ownership

Woburn Enterprises is owned by Bedford Estates, which also owns businesses such as, Property Woburn, Property London and Farms, Deer, Forestry. Woburn Enterprises consists of Woburn Abbey, Woburn Safari Park, The Inn at Woburn and Woburn Golf and Country Club.  

  1. History of Park

Animals were first introduced into Woburn Safari Park in the 1960s but the Park was actually founded in 1970. In 1970s the park had 1 million visitors per year but in the late 1980s, it dropped to 150,000. They decided to invest and create a new leisure area to attract more visitors. In 1994, a chief executive and also a marketing manager were appointed, because the keepers who ran the Park couldn’t face the challenge of the loss of visitors.

  1. Crises and Solutions – Monkey Virus & Foot and Mouth Disease

One of the crises was the Monkey Virus.  It was found that the monkeys were carrying a virus, which was deadly to humans but not monkeys. However, WSP did not want the monkeys to be used for research and so decided to have them put down. It was a public relation disaster and the media created bad publicity for the Park.

Another crisis was the Foot and Mouth disaster in 2001. If there had been one case at Woburn Safari Park, 75% of the animals would have been destroyed. The park had to close for 13 weeks, including Easter, when they usually take 7% off their earnings. Due to this crisis the Park lost around £1million.

3. Aims and Visions Statement

WSP has a many visions and aims for the future. The park wants to be world known for:

  • Fun leisure and entertainment,
  • Customer service,
  • The welfare of its animals.

4. Park Facilities and Location

WSP is located in Woburn Park, Bedfordshire, which is roughly in central England. The park is approximately and hours drive away from London, Oxford, Cambridge, Stratford, Birmingham and Leicester. There are many facilities at the park including catering for example restaurants, which provide a variety of foods and snacks. There is access for the disabled such a parking, toilets, wheelchairs, as well as other facilities for other types of groups. The park has also much more to offer to its visitors with a safari drive in which you can see rhinos, elephants, tigers, monkeys, giraffes as well as other well known animals. There is also a leisure area sea lions, underwater animals such as penguins other animals, like snakes and donkeys. There are also lemurs at this area, squirrel monkeys and also the rainbow landing which takes the whole day where you can meet the animals, and talk to the staffs that care for them.  The park also provides five safe and exciting environments for children to play in. These are the Adventure Ark, Tree Tops Action Trail, Tiny Tots Safari Trail, Badger Valley, Bobcat Run and the great Woburn Railway. There is also a gift shop where visitors can remember their trip by purchasing a gift.

Prices depend on the seasons, which are the early, main, high and winter season.

6. Marketing/Promotion

WSP is only advertised and promoted within a 1½ hours driving time away as it is not a national attraction. They market the park through Press Releases, which they send to different companies for newspapers ...
