Compare and contrast at least 1 pre 1914 poem with charge of the light brigade, focussing on the different attitudes towards war

Compare and contrast at least one pre 1914 with charge of the light Brigade by Lord Tennyson, focussing on the different views of war and how they are conveyed. In this essay I am going to compare and contrast the Charge of the Light Brigade with two pre 1914 poems, but I am mainly going to use Dulche et Decorum Est. I will however refer to the poem Disabled by Wilfred Owen. I am going to start off by comparing how the authors have described the way in which the soldiers move in the face of war and the affect war has had on the body of the soldiers. Charge of the Light Brigade by Lord Tennyson. In this poem Tennyson has got a very positive way towards the war. He has shown us in his writing that war is a glorious and heroic thing. He has done this in a number of ways. One of these ways is how he has spoke about how they move. In the poem he talks about how the soldiers move and the way in which they do this. In the first stanza he talks about how the men are only six hundred. He says "Rode the six hundred." He keeps referring to this line and how they where always riding. I think he keeps referring to this phrase "Rode the six hundred" to emphasise the point that there are only six hundred men. Which is not that many to face a whole army. In the first stanza a man who we can guess to be a general instructs the men to go " 'forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the

How is the theme of parent child relationship explored in the poems "if" "Poem at Thirty Nine", "Once Upon a Time" and three other poems?

How is the theme of parent - child relationship explored in the poems "if" "Poem at Thirty Nine", "Once Upon a Time" and three other poems? The poems here all talk about the theme of parent child relationship. The poem "if" talks about a father teaching his son how to become a man, "Poem at Thirty Nine" talks about the relationship between a father and a daughter and how she misses her father. The poem "Once Upon a Time" talks about the realtionship of a son and a father that has been westernized and the other three poems are also showing the parent child relationship theme in different ways. The poem "If" written by Rudyard Kipling is a didactic poem, it differs from "Poem at Thirty Nine" by Alice Walker an African - American feminist, writer, poet and political activist who wrote this poem at the age of 39 after realising that her father had shaped her directly and indirectly from his actions. The common thing between "If" and "Poem at Thirty Nine" is that both the parents attempt to shape their children. The difference between "If" and "Poem at Thirty Nine" is that Alice Walker is reminiscing about her father but in the poem "If" Rudyard Kipling is remembering his son. Also the poem "If" is written in four stanzas however Alice Walker's poem is free verse because the use of remembrance makes it a train of thought. Alice Walker now values her father because she now

How do both Dulce et Decorum est by Wilfred Owen and The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Tennyson show the reality of war?

How do both "Dulce et Decorum est" by Wilfred Owen and "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred Tennyson show the reality of war? Both of the poems focus on war, but they are both set at different points in time. "Dulce et Decorum est" is about the horrors of World War I, which went on from 1914- 1918. "The Charge of the Light Brigade" was based around actions taken in the Crimean War (1854- 1856). Both poems are narrates, they tell a story. Owens is about a squad of soldiers, who have been gassed; one man does not put his mask on in time and dies. The point of his poem is that that it is not "sweet, fitting or right to die for your country", which is what "Dulce et Decorum est Pro patria mori" means. In Alfred Tennyson's poem the "Light Brigade" are sent to by charge into battle, however, they are sent tot the wrong place by accident and they are sent to their deaths. Tennyson is glorifying their names and bravery. Even though they are both about war, the poems use a lot of different techniques. Owen uses a lot of gory imagery to show what life was like for the soldiers, Tennyson makes use of metaphors and similes, and he makes the war sound heroic while creating the impact of the tragedy at the end. Both of the poems are structured differently, Tennyson has carefully separated his into six stanzas, this maybe because of the 600 men in the light brigade. He also uses

How do Rossetti and Angelou portray oppression in their poems, "Cousin Kate" and "Still I Rise"?

How do Rossetti and Angelou portray oppression in their poems, "Cousin Kate" and "Still I Rise"? Christina Rossetti and Maya Angelou were and are both female poets who, due to unfortunate geographical and historical circumstances, both faced oppression, in similar and dissimilar ways. Rossetti was an unmarried woman living in the Victorian era, a rarity in its self, and did a great deal of work for the Anglo-Catholic community across England with experience and interest in the establishments which specialised in helping "fallen women" (single mothers) who were looked down on in that day and age and gave inspiration to the story behind "Cousin Kate", drawing sympathy toward these scorned women who society forgot and sneered at and brought a revolutionary approach to the matter to the public eye; maybe it just wasn't their fault. These women were ushered to the dark corners of society and looked down upon. Rossetti was concerned with "Christian Victorian woman's resignation to mutability, unfulfilment and need for patient endurance." Angelou, a woman of African-American descent, lived through a great deal of the 20th century, witnessing many changes to the treatment of her kin: the Civil Rights Movement, assassination, the Ku Klux Klan (a group of extremists who preached hate against Catholics, blacks, homosexuals and Jews among others). Her poem "Still I Rise" is

cousin Kate and the Secuction coursework

Compare and contrast "Cousin Kate" By Christina Rossetti and "The Seduction" By Eileen McCauley paying close attention to the presentation of men and the Treatment of women. "And he muttered little Slag" "The Seduction" We have been analysing two very interesting poems, "The Seduction" by Eileen McCauley and "Cousin Kate" by Christina Rossetti. "The Seduction" was written in the1980s and "Cousin Kate" in the 1860s. Both poems deal with the issue of teenage and illegitimate pregnancy. They are different in that "The Seduction" was written in a more recent time, and set in "Merseyside" where there was a high teenage pregnancy rate at the time. This poem talks about a girl who had been to a party and met a boy who had 'quite enchanted' her. He gets her drunk, takes her down to the docks, and takes her virginity. The girl discovers she is "three months gone" and thinks her life is ruined. "Cousin Kate" is also about a young girl losing her virginity out of wedlock, but this poem was set in the country in the 1860s, where getting pregnant out of wedlock was unacceptable in society and highly frowned upon. In this poem a rich lord fools around with a young "cottage maiden". This results in her getting pregnant, the lord does not intend to marry and make an honest woman of the cottage maiden, Instead he marries her "Cousin Kate" and "Cast" the cottage maiden aside. "The

Dulce et decourm est and The charge of the Light Brigade

Comparison This essay is about two contrasting peoms about war and what it represents. The first peom is 'Dulce et decorum est' written by Wilfred Owen who has a negative view of war on the other side of the argument we have 'The charge of the Light Brigade' written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson who's views about war are that it is a noble event to be a part of. I will explain what the poems mean and them compare them to each other. Dulce Et Decorum Est By Wilfred Owen The first poem I will explain is 'Dulce Et Decorum Est' it shows the realistic side of living on the front line. The title is in Latin 'Dulce Et Decorum Est' which gives the impression of an old Roman or Roman related poem. 'Dulce Et Decorum Est' is Latin for "It is sweet and honourable" the other part to that sentence is "Pro patrioa mori". It means "to die for my country". This means the sentence "Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro patrioa mori" means "It is sweet and honourable to die for my country". This proposes the theory of early propaganda to lure young men into the army to fight in wars and to hide the awful conditions in which they fought in the trenches packed with soldiers and infections which lead to disease. It was a very deceiving title. This poem is set in World War I, and when Wilfred Owen was a British soldier. So he probably did actually see the scene he describes in the poem and his experience

Compare how poets present the theme of love in; Havisham, Valentine, My last Duchess, Sonnet 18, Sonnet 116 and Piano

Compare How Poets Present The Theme Of Love The theme expressed through these chosen six poems is the nature of love. This can be positively presented in for example, sonnet 18, sonnet 116 (William Shakespeare) and Piano (D.H. Lawrence). Sonnet 18 is about how the imperfections of summer compares with the perfection and completeness of his lover. Sonnet 116 is concerned with how true love is like a long journey and marriage- being a metaphor for true love will guide you through it. Additionally, Piano is about the power of memory of his late mother striking the man at a concert he went to, which brings about a light and sensual approach on the topic of love. Whilst others view love negatively, like Havisham, Valentine (Carol Ann Duffy), and My Last Duchess Ferrara (Robert Browning). Valentine provides a mutual, more realistic interpretation of love, and discusses the matter that it’s not always like a “red rose or satin heart”. Havisham is about a depressed woman who has been stood up at the altar and has been lying in bed ever since in a terrible, emotional state, indicating the destructive nature of love. And lastly, My Last Duchess is a dramatic monologue in which we hear the story of a duke looking for a new wife and throughout the story we get the idea that he has had her previous wife killed. Shakespeare’s sonnet 116 and sonnet 18 represent different

Compare and contrast the poems London, by William Blake and Composed Upon Westminster Bridge, September 3rd, 1802, by William Wordsworth.

Compare and contrast the poems London, by William Blake and Composed Upon Westminster Bridge, September 3rd, 1802, by William Wordsworth. William Blake and William Wordsworth, both, once supported the French Revolution, which inspired the Romantic era with its love of freedom. Blake and Wordsworth led very different lives and both had different writing styles. It is interesting that they have both written poems about London, the capital of England, yet they have such contrasting views on this famous city. In the poem London, Blake writes about negative points in the city. The subject of the poem is the reality of life for the disadvantaged on the streets of London. Blake talks as if he is one of the locals and knows London like 'the back of his hand'. I believe that London reflects Blake's own opinion because he was a known supporter of the French Revolution, so the perspective expressed in the poem fits what Blake would think. So I will refer to the narrator as Blake. In the poem, Composed upon Westminster Bridge, Wordsworth writes only about the positive points in the city. It is apparent that the poem is Wordsworth's own feelings from the title and the way it is written. Wordsworth talks about an overview of London and describes the city from the outside. Wordsworth writes as if he is a tourist seeing the city for the first time. He describes all the beautiful

Comparing Poems

Comparing Poems This essay will be comparing two poems 'Mirror' by Sylvia Plath and 'The Ruined Maid' by Thomas Hardy. Both these poems are from a woman's perspective and relates to their feelings and emotions however 'The Ruined Maid' is written from Hardy Thomas's point of view, on the issue of prostitution. The Mirror is like a vivid portrayal of a woman, in which the poet Sylvia Plath is reflecting her life in a mirror and then a lake bearing in mind they both show reflections although it is in a different way. I think that Plath uses the mirror as a symbol of herself. Yet, in the second stanza she describes a woman who looks into the mirror/lake ''now I am a lake. A woman bends over me''. I also believe that this is her, one refers to her sane state of mental health (the mirror) and the other refers to the insane person within Plath (the lake). This poem shows how Sylvia Plath is in search inside her soul for talent to bring happiness within herself, this is quiet ironic because although she is very talented she feels very low to herself and struggles with a very low esteem. On the other hand the poem 'The Ruined Maid' is the opposite really. 'The Ruined Maid' is a poem about two country women, Melia and her friend. Who are both the same, until one of them turns to prostitution. The poem shows how that when one woman turns to prostitution, her whole attitude towards

How do the two poets, Owen and Tennyson, in their poems 'Dulce et Decorum est.' and 'The Charge of the light brigade' communicate their ides about war to you?

How do the two poets, Owen and Tennyson, in their poems 'Dulce et Decorum est.' and 'The Charge of the light brigade' communicate their ides about war to you? Wilfred Owen was born on the 18th of March 1893 in Oswestry. He was the eldest of four children and brought up in the Anglican religion of the evangelical school. Wilfred Owen was one of the best and most famous trench World War One poets. His major pre occupation was trench conditions and the horrors and feelings that soldiers would have had of the war. He joined the army on the 21st of October and had 14 months of training in England, he was then sent to France in 1917. He had a very short experience of the war, only four months. On this he based all of his war poetry. Very much shocked by the horrors of war experience, he went to Craig Lockhart War Hospital near Edinburgh. On the 4th of November 1918, seven days before the war ended Wilfred Owen sadly died. Alfred Lord Tennyson, an English poet, often regarded as the chief representative of the Victorian age in poetry. He was born on August the 5th, 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire. Alfred began to write poetry at an early age in the style of Lord Byron. One of his most famous poems, 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' was based on the battle of Balaclava in 1854. He did not witness this battle but instead he read the report in the times newspaper. Alfred Tennyson wrote
