What do we learn About Society In The First Two Acts Of Pygmalion?

What Do We Learn About Society In The First Two Acts Of Pygmalion? Eliza Doolittle is introduced as a poor flower girl selling flowers on Tottenham Court Road. We can immediately tell that she is lower class from the way she speaks, the way she dresses and from her profession. In this scene, the note taker, who is later identified as Henry Higgins, repeats exactly what Eliza says: "Cheer ap, Keptin; n'baw ya flahr orf a pore gel." At this point, he realizes she is from Lisson Grove, a less-than-wealthy area of England. Furthermore, Shaw foreshadows the importance for Eliza to improve. Henry Higgins comes across as an obnoxious and arrogant person in George Bernard Shaw's play, "Pygmalion." He is one of the more peculiar characters that I have read about. He treats everyone else in the play in his own particular way. His relationship with Eliza Doolittle is by far the most interesting throughout the play. Higgins treats Eliza as though she wasn't a person at all even when she offers to pay for her lessons just because she is lower class. Henry Higgins is teaches phonetics. His skilled talents become more notable when he creates Liza Doolittle, a flower girl, into Miss Doolittle, a graceful young lady. Through Eliza's transformation, she gains respect for herself, however that doesn't change the way Higgins treats her, he believes that it doesn't matter if you don't treat

the woods

The woods behind the house were pitch black. The trees hung down like reaching claws, like they longed Don't think about that kind of stuff, he warned himself. You'll freak out and run back to the house screaming, and everybody will call you a little wussbag. Sure they will. It'll be just like the time jerry Samson was dared to stay in his garage (which he suspiciously thought was haunted), and he'd come out screaming and crying and saying he'd seen a ghost in there. And the whole group had teased him for the next whole week. Just like jerry had thought his garage was haunted, Shaun thought these woods were haunted. Had thought so for quite some time. Something rustled in the trees above him. Oh no, he thought, please let it be the wind making the leaves do that. Shaun stopped, looked up. Nothing there. Just the tree branches. And a dangling arm. He had lowered his eyes and now he shot them back up to the branches. No, there was nothing there. Stupid imagination, Shaun thought, leave me alone. Something rustled in the trees above him once more. He looked straight back up. Still, nothing there. Damn it, why did I ever have to play stupid dares? Suddenly, Shaun wanted to be back in his house, under his warm blankets, with his mum and dad in the next room. Mum and dad. He wished that they were both out here with him, camping with him in their tent. But

Explain how Sealy memorably describes Clementss home and family in this extract

Explain how Sealy memorably describes Clements's home and family in this extract. Sealy describes Clements's family as being poor and unable to afford every day goods such as food etc. 'the dovecots were taking their one substantial meal of the day.' This shows that unlike other families the Dovecot's only had one proper meal all day which consisted of a plate of rice that hardly nourishes a human being and shows how little they really had. Another reason to suggest the family's mal nutrition was the description of Mrs Dovecot 'a long thread of a woman whose bones want had been picked like an eagle.' This reflects the intake of food by each of the family members in that they are so thin and malnourished. During the description of the house, Sealy uses different pieces of language to illustrate the poverty the family go through. Examples of this include 'The house was a poor, wretched coop of a room' and 'the walls of the shack were papered with old newspapers and magazines, discoloured with age and stained.' These two extracts both show the terrible state the house was in and how little money the Dovecots really had. Other descriptions given by Sealy encapsulate the harsh living conditions of the family and the poor quality furniture and lack of luxuries. 'Worm eaten boards', 'the one battered depreciated mahogany table' and 'the propped-open window'. These show that the

Letter Behalf Stuggles In Iraq

Dear Gordon Brown, My name is Andrew and I'm writing this letter to ask you to allow our troops to come home from Iraq. The war in Iraq is absolutely absurd. Innocent people are dying every day because of an ignorant mistake our former Prime minister Tony Blair made. We cannot go back in time and make a different decision because what's done is done. What we can do now is fight for peace. A true hero does not fight with violence, but with peace and dignity. The whole war is a complete lie, just to steal oil from a foreign land. Instead of putting all our hard work to waste we can work together and help others who are in need, people who are starving, and people who don't have homes. Over 176 British soldiers have died in the Iraq war, all of those wasted lives. There were no weapons of mass destruction it was all a gigantic hoax, with a sinister goal. Instead of occupying Iraq, you can be the real hero and put an end to it before it is too late. Withdraw our troops from Iraq and let the Iraqis restore their own freedom and peace. We can't expect to have peace and freedom with war because all war does is cause anger and aggression. Acknowledge the fact that your country is counting on you to send our troops back, and more importantly make peace once again. With all due respect, don't just sit there, please do something about it. Concentrate on more important matters in

Othello Obituary

Othello Obituary In recent days our most respected and famous Othello has passed away. The cause of his death was due to his self inflicted stab wounds, a medical examiner later said he died due to blood loss. Our dear honoured Othello lived an interesting life, and passed many battles, sieges and fortunes, and the things he saw and experienced in his life time are the most indescribable. When he was young he was taken by the enemy and sold into a life of slavery but he managed to escape, explore the world and become a person in his own right, moving back to Venice and joining the military. You could say Othello was a successful since the day he joined the Venetian military, and the beliefs in honour he carried contributed to the respect he was shown. He was eventually made a significant figure in our national army and his quick thinking, ability to make difficult decisions, and success in battle, made him quite a hero. His mind was always focused on work and this gave his military subordinates faith in him and they fought till the death for him. It has been said that the undoing of the once great Othello and finally ending in his suicide is due to Iago, his trusted companion, and friend in battle. It has been said that Iago twisted words, bent the truth and planted false evidence so that Othello would think his fair wife, Desdemona, which he killed slightly before

Romeos obituary

Romeo Montague Romeo Montague died on 1st November 2002. He was born in the National Hospital of Verona on the 20th October 1987. He sadly committed suicide at the tender age of sixteen. He committed suicide by drinking an unknown but extremely poisonous substance. While Romeo was alive he led a happy and joyful life. He always lived life to its fullest; he had no restrictions unlike the females of his age. Academically he struggled; however, what he lacked intellectually he gained in good looks and swordsmanship. An extract from a school report is shown below. "Romeo is a troublesome boy and can be hard to handle. He constantly misbehaves in class and often makes very rude remarks. He is a popular member of school. I believe that Romeo can be a very good boy, who is influenced by the wrong people. His work lacks effort and he is doing very poorly in all subjects. However he is a very good sportsman and seems to enjoy P.E. I would like to see some improvement next year." After many schools had expelled Romeo for good, his parents sent him to military school where he thrived. Unfortunately he did not complete the academic year. Even though Romeo had a very short life he still had quite a lot of accomplishments. He won the award for the best gunman of the city of Verona when he was only twelve years old. He also won the award for being the most handsome and good looking

Mosquito coast - Who do you think is the bravest or strongest character in the novel and why?

Mosquito coast * Who do you think is the bravest or strongest character in the novel and why? I believe that the bravest character of all the characters in the novel is Jerry, the youngest son of Allie Fox. He was the one to first show opposition to "father's" decisions and, quietly at the beginning, started rebelling against him. Many would argue that the bravest character in the book is Allie Fox, the main personality in the novel. That's because he left America for his believes and started a brand new world for him and his family. Though this would normally be considered very brave and daring, in the case of Allie Fox, he is did it because he was kind of mad. Because of that, he probably didn't think that he was doing anything too extreme or bold. Mother is also a good candidate for the title of the bravest character, but I would probably think she is the most patient and tolerant of all and not the bravest. Though mother puts up with Allie's strange character and behavior, she never really stood up for herself. She always followed his orders and she even went away from her home in America without saying a word or expressing her opinion. Charlie, I should say, is the less daring of all the characters in the book, as he always tries to please his father and even up to the end he refuses to let go of the divine image of his father that he has in his mind. Maybe that is

Jaws media coursework

Jaws Media Coursework. There are many ways that a Director can use tension in films, for example scary music, interesting camera shots, dark lighting, I intend to analyse the way the Director of Jaws creates tension. Jaws is about three men who are looking for a shark which has been killing people, Chief Bro die is the main character in this film he is a police chief who is afraid of water, When the three men are out at sea they find the shark and decide to shoot barrels to it so they would know where it was. In the end one of the men is killed by being eaten alive by the shark. The music in this film is made up of deep, slow notes that gradually increase in speed and volume. The music warns the audience that the shark is coming. Sometimes the director uses it as a false alarm to manipulate the audience. The music is used in the scene where the two boys are pretending to be the shark this creates a feeling of terror, the audience thinking the boys are about to get attacked. There are a variety of camera shots used in this film to keep the audience interested for example some shots are filmed under water, this makes it seem more realistic, and it creates a feeling as if you are in the water as well. We also don't see the shark until half way through the film which makes the audience interested because they haven't seen the shark yet. No one believes chief Brodie at the

Juliet Capulet Juliet Capulet died on November 1st 2002. She was born in the National Hospital of Verona on 24th July 1988. She died at the age of fourteen. She committed suicide by killing herself with her husband Romeos gun. Juliet led a meaningful life. She was the daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet. Juliet had always been a calm and intellectual girl. She enjoyed going to school and learning about the wonders of life. Her nurse has said: "Juliet enjoyed waking up on a school day and loved school. She would come home and tell me 'bout what she had learned. She was always got so excited. I miss her so but I guess her death is just density." Teachers have said that she was a very smart young child. Growing up Juliet found it hard to make friends; her wealth seemed to scare people.
