How does Shakespeare use dramatic devices in Act 3, scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet in order to make it such an interesting, exciting scene?

Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare. It is a famous play which brought the audience to tears. Romeo and Juliet is about two families who don’t like each other and a young girl called Juliet falls in love with a boy called Romeo who is their enemy. Romeos friend gets killed by Tybalt (Juliet’s cousin) because Romeo wasn’t fighting back because he was related to Tybalt because he had married Juliet at that time, so Mercutio (Romeos friend) fought with Tybalt. Both Romeo and Juliet lose their lives.

The story of Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy because; the two main characters die (Romeo and Juliet) due to their love for each other. The two characters were misunderstood. The Montague’s and the Capulet’s fight for the power of the city which leads to an ongoing feud. A lot of violence occurred e.g. Tybalt dies and so does Mercutio and they die partly because of the feuds. Paris (Juliet’s fiancé) also gets killed.

There are a lot of misunderstandings such as when Romeo’s cousin sees Juliet dead and she really is alive then that leads to Romeo’s death which then leads to Juliet’s death. Once the Montague’s saw Romeo and Juliet dead then that’s when they finally decide to call a truce. The nurse and Friar Lawrence bought the tragedy to come.

There are quite a lot of different themes in Romeo and Juliet and one of them is love. Romeo claims that he is in love with Roselyn but at the Capulet’s ball he sees Juliet and he instantly falls in love with her so it was love at first sight. Romeo and Juliet go behind their families back and secretly meet each other. Juliet and her nurse (Babysitter) share a better relationship than Juliet and her own mother. Juliet and her mother don’t share a very good relationship. The nurse shows Juliet parental love because the nurse is like a mother to her. Juliet and her father also don’t share a good relationship together because he tries to force her into marrying Paris but at the time Juliet was already married to Romeo.

In Shakespeare’s time it would have been normal to have your son/daughters future decided as soon as they get born whereas the modern wait till their children grow older. Also in Shakespeare’s times you were either protestant or catholic and everyone believed in heaven and hell, but the modern audience could have different religions or no religion at all.

Act 3 scene 1 is important because it changes the course of Romeo and Juliet’s lives forever. Before the fight scene Romeo and Juliet secretly get married because they are in love with each other, but once they are married, Romeo ...
