What do we discover about Ralph, Piggy, Jack and Simon in chapter one?

William Golding’s novel Lord of the flies was first published in 1954. The novel is about a group of boys who are being evacuated from a war. We don’t really find much out about the war. The boys are being evacuated by plane, when it crashes on an island.

The first character that Golding introduces to us is Ralph “the boy with the fair hair” the next character we meet is Piggy. We discover that Piggy is not very athletic and is fat “the naked crooks of his knees were plump” “he was shorter than the fair boy and very fat” Piggy immediately starts asking questions he is very worried about their not being any adults on the island “where’s the man with the megaphone” “aren’t there any grown ups at all” Ralph however is much more relaxed, he doesn’t seem so bothered about being stranded on the island. We then discover that Piggy has asthma and also wears glasses. Piggy seems to be very proud of these. “I was the only boy in my school that had asthma”

Ralph is very athletic “you could see now that he might have made a boxer” we discover that Piggy is quite intelligent; he comes up with a lot of good ideas. Its Piggy’s idea to have a meeting and make a list of names of everybody on the island. I expect we’ll want to know all their names and make a list” Piggy trusts Ralph, he tells him that he does not want to be called Piggy, because he used to get called that at school.

We find out that Ralph is a good swimmer, Piggy notices this as well ...
