Ralph is very athletic “you could see now that he might have made a boxer” we discover that Piggy is quite intelligent; he comes up with a lot of good ideas. Its Piggy’s idea to have a meeting and make a list of names of everybody on the island. I expect we’ll want to know all their names and make a list” Piggy trusts Ralph, he tells him that he does not want to be called Piggy, because he used to get called that at school.
We find out that Ralph is a good swimmer, Piggy notices this as well “you can t half swim well” Ralph’s Dad used to be a commander in the navy, Ralph thinks that his dad will come and rescue them off the island “When he gets leave he will come and rescue us”
We discover that Piggy lives with his auntie, and that she owns a sweet shop. Ralph discovers a shell in the lagoon, Piggy soon realises that it is in fact a conch and Ralph could blow it to call the others. Ralph is more interested in playing with it. Ralph tries to blow the conch but he doesn’t know how. Piggy tells Ralph how to blow it “he kind of spat” Piggy cant blow it because of his asthma so he has to tell Ralph how to.
Golding has now introduced two new characters, Jack and Simon. We discover that Jack is the leader of the choir. One of the choir faints, which turn out to be Simon. We find out that Simon is often fainting “He’s always throwing a faint” Jack doesn’t want to be called by his first name and he thinks its Childish. Jack wants to be called Merridew, Ralph tells everybody that’s Piggy is not called fatty he is called Piggy. “Hes not Fatty, his real name is Piggy” at this point Piggy is feeling very betrayed by Ralph because he trusted him.
Now the boys decide to elect a chief, Jack immediately demands to be chief. “I ought to be chief” They decide to have a vote, Ralph wins. Piggy did not want to vote for Ralph because he told all the other boys his name. Ralph then tells Jack that he can be in charge of the choir to make them hunters. Ralph does this because Jack just lost the election and wants to keep him on his side.
Ralph then decides as chief that three of them should go and explore the island. Ralph chooses Jack and Simon to go with him. Piggy is quite upset that Ralph did not pick him; Ralph tells him he would be no good on a job like this. Ralph then gives Piggy responsibility to gather names “now go back Piggy and take names, that’s your job”
W never really find much out about Simon in chapter 1, he goes exploring with Ralph and Jack. He is imaginative when he sees the bushes “like candles”. Near the end of chapter 1 Jack, Ralph and Simon find a pig stuck in the creepers. Jack draws his knife to kill it, but he hesitates and the pig escapes. This shows that jack is potentially violent, Jack feels embarrassed about not killing the pig. This leads to the end of chapter 1.
