A Christmas Carol

Why do you feel Dickens wrote ‘A Christmas Carol?

In a ghost story you will expect to read something about haunted houses, ghosts running after living humans. But Dickens did not make it very frightful, rather ‘fairy tale ‘ sort of story. The ghost of spirits in the story are there for a purpose, not to scare the reader, but to send out a message about Christmas and that Scrooge through his life begun to dislike Christmas and the three spirits showed him his past, present and future. When you hear a Christmas story, you expect – happiness, feasts happy family etc. but Dickens wrote about people suffering, poverty etc, also known as the reality of life. A Christmas carol is a different story; because it sends out a message to the reader think about what life was really like.

The main character Ebenezer Scrooge Dickens describes him as a very concerned about his money than his family. Scrooge is very courteous about his wealth and tends to live a simple life because, does not like to waste his money on luxuries. He is also a man determined to get the job done. Scrooge represents to the reader that he is a man which is greedy about his wealth and does not realise that the used to love him (family) still accept him, because Christmas is a time for forgiving and giving to family, friends, poor etc.  Scrooge should care about others more around this time of year. Also known as a ‘snobby’ Victorian man of his time, because he said that there is no use in being happy if are not wealthy.

Marley as a ghost was really old rugged. His ghost also looked very decrepit due to his old age and the clothing. Marley came to warn Scrooge about the three spirits coming to haunt him, and their timing for the first two ghosts but not the last of the will come in its own. Marley came to Scrooge because he wants his spirit to be set free. Scrooge was not entirely scared because he doesn’t believe in ghosts and he gets nervous and wants to be reassured, thinks he is seeing things (illusion).
