Is there sufficient evidence in sources D to J to explain why the Troubles broke out in Northern Ireland in 1969?

To answer this question I shall look at each source individually and evaluate them and use knowledge of my own I will then look to link them all together to make a firm conclusion clearly stating whether there is sufficient evidence in the sources D to J.

The first source, which I shall evaluate, is source D. Source D is an extract of a Roman Catholic describing her school days and the anti-protestant stance taken by the vice principal. This shows that Ireland was literally ‘divided’ by the nationalists and unionists. This is brought forward when the Roman Catholic says:

‘She didn’t hate Protestants. But her view was that they weren’t Irish’

This shows that they still referred to themselves as Irish and not as British and wanted Ireland to be separated from Non Irish people. This is however only an example of one person’s opinion and with this alone and without my knowledge this could be considered as not being such a strong point by a vast majority of people. This source also doesn’t point towards why the Troubles broke out, as there is no example of violence just opinion.

Source E the second source, which I shall evaluate, is a Catholic priest binding Erin (a lady representing Ireland) in ropes and is from a Protestant viewpoint. It is representing the Protestants opinion that Catholics are trying to restrict Ireland into being one nation full of only Catholics. Again this source doesn’t directly link with the Troubles but can be a reason for why the Troubles broke out.

Source F, a map showing Derry’s population and boundary commissions, the third source I shall evaluate shows the viewpoint of some Catholics not wanting to have anything to do with the British ...
