To what extent do you consider that Hitler and the Nazis had achieved their aim of social revolution and unity (Volksgemeinschaft)? By 1939?

Hitler wanted to use his power to create Volksgemeinschaft, what he called the all pure German nation. Hitler interpreted the Volksgemeinschaft as a pure nation working together for the benefit of German people. To succeed in his aim, Hitler knew that he would have to turn the whole of Germany upside down, getting rid of “outsiders” and establishing only one class. But not all of Nazis plans were “new”, their philosophy in some respect was not revolutionary. Nazism was a society of the extreme right, and revolutions are normally associated with left-wing political parties. Many debates have not been closed on this matter; A pro-Nazi revolution historian David Schoenbaum has argued that Nazism was a powerful original force in German culture. Schoenbaum acknowledged that the Third Reich perceived many of the conventional changes one links with an embryonic industrial society. Also claiming that Nazis effectively anticipated an image of a society without the typical class differences. The Nazi citizens quoted about themselves “united like no other in recent German history, a society of opportunities for young and old”. Nazi was a close society, but in admitting that are we also admitting that getting rid of “impure bloods” will make any society close? Schoenbaum has many excellent points in his reasoning but some aspects of his viewpoint seams to be pro-Nazis and at the same time underlining the view that Nazis went to far in searching for the perfect race.

Starting a Social revolution involves coming up with a new way. Hitler’s plans for world domination began in his book Mein Kamf; the German Youth was to be completely converted into Volksgenossen; Aryan children. German Children were to be brought up as good National Socialists and loyal followers of Hitler. A new way of education was introduced alongside the Hitler Youth movement. With the youngsters Hitler was going to make a new world. Children were to have physical education every day, many after school youths clubs were introduced. Some of the aims which Hitler set for his Youth were: Be Physically fit (discrimination against the weak), Sacrifice self for the national good (a lack of self respect), and strengthen the racial purity of the German Nation. Even from youth girls were taught their main aim was to bear children for the Fuhrer, the boys were constantly reminded that they were to sacrifice themselves for their nation. Hitler’s Youth had little time where they could think for themselves, as Hitler’s program included the after school activities. The Youth Groups offered many activities for the Youth, which were: sport, camps, military training. There were Catholic groups which offered church groups, but Nazis tried to reduce their influence and using propaganda attracting children towards the Hitler Youth groups.

For social revolution to occur, you would need a major change. Although the teaching and the curriculum changed the structure of the schooling did not alter. Nazis were in power for 12 years; this amount of time was not enough to change the nation, only enough to change a generation. Not all Youth were to accept the new rules. Certain swing groups, who were influenced by the American culture, were a threat to Hitler. Swing groups admired American Dance music and modern American ways of life. Nazis considered them “criminals”. The Swing groups were mainly middle-to upper class, who had ...
