Why did Britain go to war over Poland in September 1939?

There were many reasons why Britain decided to all to war over Poland in September 1939. Britain had already tried to pacify Germany by granting them concessions, however this had been unsuccessful.

Also there had been many changes since September 1939 such as the vast increase in military spending and now the rearmaments were near completion, and this may have been a window of opportunity for them to defeat Germany, and as war seemed inevitable at the time, it would have been better for Britain to fight now rather than later. If they kept the policy of appeasement, then Britain would be required to keep on rearming at the same pace as Germany to enable them to compete, if war broke out at any stage, and Chamberlain was informed that his military was at its peak. Chamberlain also knew he couldn’t maintain a high level of spending on quality military armaments, without seriously harming the economy. Therefore Chamberlain was advised it was better sooner, rather than later.

In particular British air defences were ready and prepared to fight, and in September 1938 Chamberlain had a situation where his air forces were underdeveloped compared with the German air force. Also due to the fact that the French rearmament program was accelerating and now that both France and Britain were ready this seemed the best time to go to war.
