Why did the Whitechapel murders attract so much attention?

 In this essay I will be analysing the reason why Whitechapel murders attracted so much attention in the 19th century.

It was the smaller percentage of crime – violent crime, which received the most attention from the people of London and later the majority of the country. During the 19th century, the rare happenings of the Whitechapel murders ended up attracting a considerable amount of attention from the people of London. One of the major reasons that the murders became so popular is due to the modus operandi practised by Jack the Ripper. This is due to Jack the Ripper’s strategically and precisely planned way of murdering his victims – he began by strangling his victims before cutting their throats, mutilating them, and removing their internal organs. Therefore, I gather that because of Ripper’s modus operandi, the British public were likely be more intrigued with the unusual and uniqueness of these particular killings ; hence the reason why Ripper’s modus operandi turned out to be one of the major reasons behind the fact the Whitechapel murders obtained so much attention.

Likewise the fact that 19th century Whitechapel was over-crowded, unsanitary, polluted with smog and very maze – like, lead any person to become vulnerable. This information aided Jack the Ripper’s popularity and indeed it aided him with the murders themselves as people were not able to keep a clear eye out on the road. Moreover, these conditions suggest that the police found it immensely difficult to catch the criminal in question due to the smog, and the secrecy of the streets of Whitechapel, in which a killer could easily be enveloped and disguised.
