Magic - I run my eyes over the drab shades of grey and dark grey of the miserably peeling walls.

Magic I run my eyes over the drab shades of grey and dark grey of the miserably peeling walls. It is barely the second time I've seen the inside of this particular room. You'd think I'd know this whole building inside out, having spent 20 odd years inside it, I think wryly. This was where I'd been sent to as a young woman of just 19. I shudder as I recall the arrest, the trial, and then the uneventful 22 years that had gone by just like that. I could have had fulfilled my dream of being a psychologist, gotten married and maybe even have had kids. Shattered hopes. I reprimand myself silently. Bad company gets you nowhere, I remind myself. Shaking off my negative thoughts does not seem to work. Maybe I just need space and time. An officer stamps my inky thumb on the four, five sheets of paper allowing for my release. I am going to be a free spirit soon. As if on cue, the same officer bellows, "You're free to go." At last. Four words spoken by a pot-bellied, balding man have never sounded so beautiful to me. I head for the exit, pushing open one door after another. Finally I stand at the front door. The last door holding me back from the rest of the world. I push this one open and step out. The natural light I haven't seen for so long apart from my occasional courtyard exercises overwhelms me and I wince involuntarily. Such brightness. I turn my face towards the sun, feeling

A letter to Eastern eye's Problem Page

A letter to Eastern eye's Problem Page My name is Ajaz Ahemd, I am British citizen born and bred in Yorkshire. My relationship with a certain girl has been a roller coaster of a ride and now I am nothing more than lonely and heartbroken. It all started in the college canteen, my eyes were attracted to a beautiful and elegant young lady that appeared before me, her name was Nazma. She was an independent and unique lady and like me she had great career aspects, at that time I wanted to join the police and she was studying business and finance. Fortunately for me I became her boyfriend and shared many passionate moments, which are now just blissful memories. Even though we loved each other truly things never quite went how we planned them to be. Nazma risked everything for me she took beatings from her parents to see me! I felt so guilty but I knew I was the only thing in her life that made her happy and she was willing to take the beats to see me that day. Her family disapproved of me just because my ancestors are from Pakistan and hers were from Bangladesh, me and Nazma did not care as far as we were concerned we are both British citizens and where are ancestors lived had no effect on us at all. In august Namza went on holiday with her parents to Bangladesh to visit some relatives, well this is what they told her and more so I also encouraged her to go. This is the biggest

The Undetermined Amount.

Amy Houser Houser 1 English 113 Mrs. Lomax October 5, 2002 The Undetermined Amount A day in Johnson's life reveals several confrontations that enrage every fiber of his being. But Johnson, a man with many morals is able to push his anger down inside along with many other things. Johnson in "Like a Winding Sheet" eventually releases his encroaching rage through his tense, tingling hands. Johnson is an African American male who has a job working the late shift at a manufacturing plant. The story opens with Johnson lying in bed with the sheets wrapped tightly around his body; this is where the story gets its title "The Winding Sheet". Johnson's job requires him to stand on his feet for long periods of time, which make his legs ache. Getting out of bed in the mornings can be very challenging especially when he does not get enough rest. Johnson's wife, Mae also works the late shift at a plant on the other side of town. Johnson and Mae have a loving relationship, and Johnson always treats Mae with compassion and respect. Mae is somewhat superstitious because the day is Friday the 13th and she is afraid to leave the house. She is thinking that something bad is going to happen if she leaves. Johnson tries to comfort Mae and with confidence, convince her that everything is going to be all right. Johnson uses the phrase "today is payday, and payday is a good luck day

How does Ambrose Bierce create suspense in "An Arrest"?

How does Ambrose Bierce create suspense in "An Arrest"? In "An arrest", Ambrose Bierce creates suspense in the first paragraph by stating five facts about Orrin Brower in the first sentence alone, then by stating a few more in the lines to follow. It is important to state facts like this because you need to get the reader interested at the start otherwise he/she won't read on. In this case, Ambrose Bierce starts off by saying, "Having murdered his brother-in-law". This catches the reader's attention because nearly everyone loves a good murder story. After reading the first few lines, we also learn that this is a fugitive story. Then the thing that caught my attention after this was after he knocked the prison guard down with the lead bar, it says, "he had the folly to enter a forest" which means this was a big mistake! In the second paragraph, Ambrose Bierce tells us the night was "dark with neither moon nor stars visible". This means there wasn't very much light so Orrin couldn't see where he was going. Also, it says he'd never "dwelt thereabout", so he had never been in that forest before. This adds tension to the story because it's very easy for Orrin Brower to get lost in the forest. "He could not have said if he were getting farther away from the town or going back to it". In the first paragraph Orrin Brower was a "fugitive from justice" whereas in the second paragraph

Mathematics Coursework : The Phone Box Problem

Mathematics Coursework : The Phone Box Problem Introduction: A woman only has 10 and 20 pence coins to use in a phone box. I have to investigate the number of different ways she could use 10 and 20 pence coins in a phone box. I am also investigating a man who only has 10 and 50 pence coins. I will start off with the woman. 0 pence call 10=10p =1 way 20 pence call 20=10p+10p 20=20p =2 ways 30 pence call 30=10p+10p+10p 30=20p+10p =3 ways 30=10p+20p 40 pence call 40=10p+10p+10p+10p 40=20p+10p+10p 40=10p+20p+10p =5 ways 40=10p+10p+20p 40=20p+20p 50 pence call 50=10p+10p+10p+10p+10p 50=20p+10p+10p+10p 50=10p+20p+10p+10p 50=10p+10p+20p+10p =8ways 50=10p+10p+10p+20p 50=20p+20p+10p 50=20p+10p+20p 50=10p+20p+20p Pascal´s triangle theory This should help me to work out long and write out long equations like the ones I am doing E.g. 50 5 10p =1 1 20p and 3 10p=4 =8 ways 2 20p and 1 10p=3 To get this I used the calculator button which has a big c you put the total number of units at the top then you put the number of 20 pence coins at the bottom. You use the biggest one at the bottom I use 20 pence because it is relevant. The way that Pascal made up this theory was he got a triangle and started with 1 at the top and started adding them up as he went down like this: 1 2 1 3 3 1 4 6 4 1 5 10 10 5 1 6 15 20 15 6 1 7 21 35 35 21 7 1 He did this for the

I didn’t know what was going on.

I didn't know what was going on. All of a sudden there was this terribly loud knocking on the door. Willy didn't seem to think anything of it, but people don't just come knocking at your door in the middle of the night. I mean, what if there really had been a fire in the hotel? If I had known who it was I wouldn't have said a word, but I had no idea. It was so late and we had both had a couple of drinks. How was I to know his son would show up hundreds of miles away from home? Before I knew it I was stuck in the bathroom. He told me to stay there...but when they started talking I got curious. I wanted to come out! What really did it was his impression, that lisp was so funny! I would have kept quiet but I couldn't help laughing - and then I was frightened by something moving in the bathtub. I couldn't just sit in there while something slithered around. I simply didn't know what would happen if I came out. I didn't know how much pain I would cause. When I heard Biff asking his dad to convince his teacher to give him more points I absolutely melted. He really admired his dad and he believed that he could persuade the teacher! He swore all Willy had to do was talk to him and he'd change his mind. But Willy was just so delicate...when I first saw him he looked so downtrodden, like the weight of the world was just resting on his poor hunched shoulders. But when we began to

It is so hot, that is the thought that has been running through my head all night, now it is 6:30am and my alarm is ringing... I rolled out of the king size bed in the middle of the master bedroom in a house I had recently purchased, the house more less completely covered with marble, was still ridiculously hot with out air-conditioning in very humid South Florida, no matter for this will all be taken care of by the decorator by the time I return to this part of the world, and I wont have to deal with this irritating nonsense. I told Tommy to be ready to leave at 7:15am, so that gave me time to have a shower and get ready, usually I would not of hurried of to get dressed before smoking my usual morning cigarette, but due to being awake most of the night I has already smoked enough in bed. After my shower I put on a black suit and shoes, a red tie, and a pair of Armani sunglasses. And went down to the kitchen. At the bottom of the stairs sat my luggage, two black leather suitcases and my briefcase. Tommy met me in the kitchen; he made me a cup of coffee, and put my bags in the limo. I met him in the car a few minutes later. It was about an hours drive to the airport in which time I slept. When we arrived at the airport it was a short wait in the First Class line to check in. Tommy and I then proceeded to the First Class lounge, where we sat for about 40 minutes before boarding

My Experiences of Medsim

They were all there. All two hundred of them, all having the same ambition as me, wanting so very badly to be a doctor. Nottingham University was the setting for this union of prospective medics and I was there, trying to be part of the crowd. Eyes throughout the lecture hall flickered up sharply and scanned the room with worry as two hundred students measured themselves up against each other. For many of them, and I was included, it was the first time they had been in the same the room as "the competition". The lecture hall hummed with polite conversation as students talked and friendships were made. The excitement built, as the three-day conference was about to start. The lecturer David Graven walked on and welcomed us to Medsim and kicked off the conference, it was Friday afternoon and the first lecture begun, the topic was why we were all here and what we should get out of it. David Graven filled us with inspiration and prepared us for what was to come. After a formal dinner where we were seated with our teams, the people who we were going to be working together with for the next few days, it was back the lecture hall for some essential information for what was about to come. The night ended with all the students going happily to there rooms. The next day started early with a serious set of exams that were voluntary and were set by Charles University, Prague, an

WRITING TO INFORM/EXPLAIN/DESCRIBE

SECOND ENGLISH CORESWORK: WRITING TO INFORM/EXPLAIN/DESCRIBE The smell of deliciously baked potatoes filled the air, followed by the scent of mouth watering burgers. Staff at "Bobby's Burger" were under pressure to produce the maximum amount of burgers as fast and as soon as they could. Ignorant and boisterous customers would soon be arriving, rushing to be the first in the long everlasting queue. "Come on people, I don't pay you miserable lot good money for slouching, now get on with making those burgers. I want you working swiftly and eagerly so that I can see smoke coming out of your bony fingers," the boss yelled at his employee's; as he carefully inspected how well they were doing their job. In half an hours time the customers would arrive. Tension levels of the workers was rising. The customers would walk into "Bobby's Burger" thinking that they owned the place, assuming themselves as more superior than the workers. Customers behaving as though they were they king of the jungle! The employee's hated their job, due to the obvious fact that they were treated with no respect at all Abruptly everyone stopped whatever they were doing and stared at the tacky clock. Tick, tock, tick, tock, ten seconds remained until the customers barged in. Only ten seconds to go and their pride and dignity would be stripped from them. The customers would come marching through, resembling

Discussing Skin type and condition.

INTRODUCTION IN THIS ASSIGMENT I WILL DISSCUSS THE SKIN TYPE/CONDITIONS. THERE IS MANY SKIN TYPES I.E OILY, DRY, COMBINATION, SENSITIVE AND DEHYDRATED. THERE IS ALSO NORMAL SKIN WHICH IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS ASSIGNMENT AS IT IS NOT A COMMEN SKIN TYPE AND VERY FEW PEOPLE HAVE NORMAL SKIN. THERE ARE DIFFERENT MASSAGE TECHNEGUES FOR DIFFERENT SKIN TYPES AND ALSO DIFFERENT PRODUCTS USED. SKIN TYPES THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF THE SKIN DOES NOT VARY FROM PERSON TO PERSON, BUT THE PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONING OF ITS DIFFERENT FEATURES DOES; IT IS THAT THAT GIVES US SKIN TYPES. THE FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT PART OF FACIAL TREATMENT IS THE CORRECT DIAGNOSIS OF THE SKIN TYPE. THIS IS CARRIED OUT AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH TREATMENT, WHICH IS ALSO KNOWN AS A SKIN ANALYSIS. OILY: OILY SKIN NORMALLY TENDS TO GIVE A SHINE OF IT, IT ALSO HAS A SALLOW APPEARANCE. THE SKIN WILL APPEAR COARSE AND THICK AND OPEN PORES ARE VISIABLE. THE SKIN WILL HAVE COMEDONES AND AN INCREASE IN SEBUM PRODUCTION OFTEN CAUSES THE APPEARANCE OF SKIN BLEMISHES. OILY SKIN HAS THESE CHARACTERISTICS: > THE PORES ARE ENLARGED; > THE MOISTURE CONTENT IS HIGH; > THE SKIN TONE IS GOOD, DUE TO THE PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF THE SEBUM; > THE SKIN HAS UNEVEN PIGMENTATION; DRY: DRY SKIN IS LACKING IN EITHER SEBUM LOST OR MOISTURE, OR BOTH.
