The Industries of Future Medicine

Life is said to have begun in the sea, because fossil evidence shows us that blue-green algae developed photosynthesis and produced oxygen between 1.8 and 2.5 billion years ago (Anikouchine and Sternberg 207). In the present day we have begun to utilize the materials these marine species offer, with the production of pharmaceuticals. Though the production of drugs made from marine materials is much more costly than drugs made from land materials, the drugs made from sea life give us new cures and incite into the world around us. In today’s day an age, there are several companies participating in the production of medicines made from sea life. Most company’s focus on land based pharmaceuticals, but as I said before, the funds required to extract these medicines from the sea are so great that it’s far more logical to make drugs from land species. After gaining much information on the topic I feel that collecting medicines from the sea is far more productive than proceeding with the production of drugs made from life on land. What doesn’t make sense to me is that we’ve explored outer space, but we can’t explore our planets oceans; the oceans are our next frontier. Several companies have begun their insertion into the next frontier; such as Hong Kong based Bio-Works Co. Ltd. WorkBeads (Bio-Works), Europa Bioproducts (Europa), Top-Medical Medical Dressing Co., Ltd. (Top-Medical), Chengdu Kaijie Bio-Pharmaceuticals. Co. Ltd. (Chengdu), Chemte Biotech Co., Ltd. (Chemte), Huaian Angel Medical Instruments Co., Ltd. (Huaian), and Wuhan Yuancheng Technology Development Co., Ltd. (Wuhan), but there are far more industries involved.

All of these companies contain a specific product base, on which all their R & D, Research and Development, is based. Bio-Works is focused on the production of chemical pharmaceuticals, like Agarose ("Bio-Works” 1), but Europa has a wide range of pharmaceuticals; their leading drug extracted from marine life is Phycobiliproteins ("Bioproducts for Research” 1). Top-Medical is focused on the production of wound dressings, but what makes their products unique is that they are made from seaweed (“Top-Medical Medical Dressing” 1). Chengdu is the leading peptide manufacturer and also is a company who’s working on the frontiers of science with their drug Calcitonin made from marine life ("CHENGDU KAIJIE BIO-PHARMACEUTICALS" 1). Chemte, which is a producer of intermediate pharmaceuticals, which is an organic compound that is formed between a drugs natural substance and the final pharmaceutical form (“Pharmaceutical Intermediate” 1); for example the drug Tetrodotoxin made from marine organisms (“Manufacturer (supplier) of Tetrodotoxin (TTX)” 1). Huaian is a mass producer of disposable medical instruments and medical products, but this company stands out from the rest because of its production of absorbable sutures made from marine life (“Huaian Angel Medical Instruments” 1). Wuhan is China’s leading supplier of chemical pharmaceuticals, like Ara-c, or Cytarabine that are made from oceanic plant life (“Wuhan Yuancheng Technology Development” 1). What’s even more interesting than the companies themselves is how they synthesize the production of these drugs from marine life.

The drugs that these companies produce are made from several oceanic organic materials, even some that one could find washed up on the beach or in an aquarium; like seaweed or Puffer fish for example. What is miraculous about Bio-Works, Europa, and Top-Medical, is that they all produce pharmaceuticals and medical materials made from seaweed. Bio-Works is focused on the production of Agarose, which is made from seaweed; the company gets Agarose into a usable state by first purifying the seaweed into a powder ("Bio-Works” 1). Europa produces the drug called Phycobiliproteins, also made from seaweed ("Bioproducts for Research” 1). Top-Medical produces ...
