Abstract

The experiment was intended to study memory whether or not can be influenced changed after it’s formed. The aim of the study was to investigate eyewitness change in memory after supplied information after an event. The method consists of being and independent measure design , it has opportunity sampling within the participants . The participants are students from The American School of Tegucigalpa and they all have Spanish as there native language . The results consist of mean , mode, standard deviation , and the range of the speed estimates given by the participants . The verb contacted had a higher estimate than bumped . The conclusion of the experiment can be that leading questions asked after an event can influence a eyewitness memory .

Introduction

The Loftus & Palmer study was a psychological study carried out by Elizabeth Loftus and Palmer in 1974. The aim of the study was to investigate whether or not an eyewitness’s memory can be changed by information supplied to them after an event. Loftus and Palmer also wished to discover whether or not a person's memory can be influenced by this information.

The aim of the study was to determine how memory is influenced by circumstances and prompting surrounding memory storage and recall. Past studies had concluded that memories were not accurate representations of actual events but were actually formed using past experiences and other influences . The original study consisted of two separate experiments however this replication consisted of only the first of those two. The study was tested on forty-five students split into five categories, each with nine students. In the study forty-five students from the University of Washington were shown seven film clips of car accidents. The clips ranged from five to thirty seconds long. After viewing each clip the students were asked to write a report on what they had seen. They were asked a series of questions about the videos. The critical question in this study was "At what speed was the car traveling?" The five categories of students were asked this question but with a different verb. Loftus and Palmer wanted to see if the verb influenced the student’s answers. Loftus and Palmer concluded this experiment stating that the research suggests that memory is easily distorted because of the questioning technique after that event that produces and effect of reconstructive memory.

Design

The experiment replicated consisted on using and independent measure design because it involves using more than two groups, were the participants have more than one verb . The independent variable was the verb used in “'About how fast were the cars going when they …………. into each other?” The five verbs used were smashed, collided , bumped, contacted , and hit . The dependent variable was the speed estimate from each student. The ethical guidelines were followed , avoiding harm , stress , and the unwillingness of the participation of the participants ...
