“Context is all”

“Context is all” (Margaret Atwood). Does this mean that there is no such thing as truth? When you process this statement and this question in your brain you immediately try to understand all words in the phrase and define them so then you can get a complete understood conclusion of everything. In the first place let’s define the word context as the part of a text or statement that surrounds a particular word or passage and determines its meaning. For someone to understand something you must first look where that something is taking place. For example if you say “Chile” you need to know the surrounding of that word because it has two meanings; a kind of vegetable and a country in South America. If you don’t take a look outside that word you won’t be able to understand it. The other important word to define in this statement is “truth”. There are basically two types of truth. The first one is your own perception of things and you say it is true for the perspective of your own person. The second type of truth is the one, others but not you, think they are in the right way of saying something, for instance, what they are saying they think is the truth. If you join this two types of truth in a balance the one it is going to be heavier it is your truth, and this is because it is at your convenience and it is what you believe is right in your way of thinking. A person’s perception of something can change with obtaining different and new information, and if this gets in a bigger amount, what you think previously to be the truth now it is not, it has changed, concepts that were considered to be false now they seem to be more real, and because of a massive intervention of people, that concept or circumstance is now considered to be fact and true.

In the aspect of language of people, depending on the culture and the kind of group of people you are dealing with the context will be different. For example “hit the ground” this phrase is commonly used in the urban dance that some people practice where they fusion  rap and freestyle moves; in this environment this phrase will mean “dance” ; but if you go to other group of people and tell them “hit the ground” they will stomp their feet in the ground.
