This example would be in private knowledge as, not everyone would have the same experience as another. In this case, other’s opinions and their emotions would not have that great effect as your emotion is what is related to you and your own experience. But is emotion only in private knowledge? Take the Hussini case for instance, the Howard government was set on Hussini being a terrorist, that even after he had been cleared of the charge, the government still forced that he was a terrorist. Different factors and experiences play parts in how your emotions are for certain things. As in this case, the government had been through the terrorism stage with war in Iraq, they had to look after their country so therefore anyone with a link to a terrorist would be a possible threat. Even though emotion might not be as strong in some areas than another, it still plays a part even if it is subconsciously. An plain object, such as a chair; if you know it’s comfortable, and you sit down in it to relax, even though you might not have intense emotions about it, you still have that subconsciousness emotion that it’s an ok object.
Hunger is a feeling which signals you need food. Feeling is part of the emotive process, so is hunger an emotion? Well there are two main types of hunger; emotional and physical. Most people associate food with comfort and security as from their childhood, it was food that helped them survive. These feelings created the emotional hunger, which has been developed from the brain which creates a craving for food to compensate for unpleasant feelings. So hunger is technically not an emotion, it is just based on feelings causing the hunger to happen. Physical pain also comes from feeling – (feeling being from the sense of touch) – the memory of pain is an emotion, as each time an event is brought up the memory of the pain could either have a positive of negative effect which eventuates into a happy or sad emotion.
Many people have differing emotions to different things, and also two people could have vastly different emotions for the same thing. Why would this be? Is one of the people’s emotions considered irrational or wrong? Not everyone is brought up in the same way, therefore their backgrounds and opinions differ and what they know is to be correct. What one thinks or feels opposed to another, from their eyes the other person’s emotions or opinions may seem wrong and vice-versa. But can people be wrong about their own emotions? If someone experiences something which creates a perception and the emotion following on from the perception – wouldn’t the emotion be right for that person at least anyway? This argument is similar to religion in that there are thousands of religions over the world, each with followers who believe it to be ‘right’. But someone from another religion, believing thoroughly in theirs, comes across a different religion; they would perceive this new religion as wrong.
However the case, someone’s own emotion could be wrong if it is rather irrational that it takes over any moral sense and their decision is totally controlled by emotion.
For example; a person wanting to break up a long term relationship, after an upsetting event caused by the partner. Their emotion from this event would slowly reside into other little annoying things which the partner is doing (unintentionally), and the emotion would build up until they couldn’t hold it anymore and their emotion takes over and becomes irrational. Emotion itself is not necessarily right or wrong; it can just be over or under exaggerated and other factors can contribute to whatever the situation is.
Can people block their emotions and cover up with another without realising? Or maybe they force themselves to have a certain emotion even if it isn’t genuine. In a situation where someone goes through a traumatic experience and doesn’t talk about it to anyone, their inner emotions could start having an effect in their daily lives such as not working, sleeping or feeling as well as they used to. It is a psychological effect caused by the blocked emotions, and as they didn’t want to tell anyone they would “cover up” what they really feel with some other emotion giving the impression everything was fine. Following on, they would start believing it themselves and either forget about what happened, or not know what to feel. Others can lead them to recognize their “hidden” emotion by talking them through the process of what happened and the person might be able to break this so called barrier and find their real emotions.
Emotions are neither right nor wrong, and work in conjunction with private and public knowledge and opinions. Nearly anything anyone does, is related to an emotion, even if it is subconscious and same with knowledge. If people learn something, they form opinions and from this make decisions based on opinions leading onto emotions. Others can influence or help people realise their emotions by expressing facts and experiences. If emotions are generally a necessary part of the life process, then conscious emotions are a necessary part of all social action.
