Business description:

Colorado Created Music (CCM) is a micro label producer of music specializing as a creative and business outlet for classical and acoustic musicians.  The company started as a vision for musician and entrepreneur Darren Curtis Skanson.  Colorado Creative Music has been able to compete due partly in response to the new digital technological revolution sweeping the music industry.

SWOT analysis:

Strength:

  1. The two distinctive product line ( DCS and Acoustitheraphy)        
  2. The musicians CCM represents and the musical appeal they have.
  3. Web presence for direct-sales
  4. Knowledge of festival and mall performance methods that lead to sales.

Weaknesses:

  1. Limited financial resources for growing the business – it is hard to see how CCM can afford to hire additional people at this time to take some of the managerial load off Skanson and help him grow the business.
  2. Small home-based business with part-time, inexperienced staff.
  3. The majority of sales are made direct; traditional distribution is through only one “one stop” distributor, which has been able to secure limited sales of CCM products.

  1. Signing additional musicians which fit into Darren Skanson’s vision.
  2. Industry is big enough and diverse enough to support many niche players like CCM
  3. Selling the Acoustitherapy brand and using the proceeds to grow CCM
  4. Partner with other vanity or micro-labels to centralize the sales functions and provide a larger selection to one-stops retailers
  5. Growing to a size that a major studio will want to buy CCM

Threats:

  1. Low entry barriers encourage continual stream of new niche players
  2. Traditional distribution channels are difficult to penetrate
