My second learning style was Intrapersonal. The skills related to this style are: evaluating own thinking, being aware of and expressing feelings, understanding self in relation to others, and thinking and reasoning on higher levels. (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007, Key 2.2 How to put your Multiple Intelligences to work for you.). I think this learning style works in conjunction with the Interpersonal style. The more you understand yourself, the better you can understand others. This would give you more tools when handling conflict. When communicating and collaborating within a group I could act as a mediator when conflicts arise.
My last learning style was Verbal-Linguist. Some skills related to this style are: analyzing own use of language, remembering terms easily, explaining, teaching, learning, and understanding syntax and word meaning. (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007, Key 2.2 How to put your Multiple Intelligences to work for you.). I am an avid reader and most times I comprehend materials I have read easily. Within, a group I can help others understand what they have read but explaining it is simpler terms.
Next, my top three personality types in order were: Organizer, Giver, and Thinker. As an Organizer I am detailed oriented. I need to know exactly what is expected of me in any given task. I like things to be well-structured. I am organized and able to follow a plan. Within a group I could break tasks into smaller portions and schedule times or dates when they should be completed.
My second personality type was Giver. As a Giver I love helping others. I am caring, understanding, supportive and encouraging. I tend to put others’ needs above myself, but have learned that my needs are important also. Like my Interpersonal learning styles, a Giver is people-focused. Within a group of individuals, I would be very understanding and supportive of others. I would go the extra mile to be sure they do not fail.
My last personality type was Thinker. As a Thinker, I like to understand how things work. I seek clarity in everything I do, which works well with my Organizer personality type. Even though I like working within a group, when first given a task I like to take time by myself to gather my thoughts. When making a decision I am driven by facts, logic, and reason. Within a group, I would look at the facts given and logically come up with a plan to complete the task.
Once you understand your own learning styles and personality types, you need to understand the groups learning styles and personality types and how the differ from your own. Focusing on how their learning styles and personality types will benefit the team. For example, you can assign tasks that capitalize on those person strengths. When this is accomplished a group of individuals will connect and communicate more successfully. They will work effectively within the team environment.
