Cashier
In a front line position at Kudler, a cashier must be approachable, greeting customers quickly. He or she will scan each product while ensuring proper pricing, will calculate the total, and will process the appropriate payment. This person will answer customer questions about products or product location, and will when slow, bag appropriately the customer’s order, as well as watch for missed items in and under cart or basket to be rung up to avoid product loss. When the cashier is awaiting a customer, he or she will clean and restock the register isles, empty trash, and assist other cashiers if needed. This person will be required to stand, lift, reach, and squat during the shift.
A cashier only needs a high school education or GED, have people skills, be able to communicate effectively, and have basic math skills. The starting compensation for such position can range from minimum wage to $ 12.00 per hour depending on store location.
The Kudler cashier position provides inner store experience allowing opportunities for employees to move up to front end supervisor or customer service manager, providing motivation for employees to show up and work hard.
Stock Person
Usually after hours, but occasionally during hours, a stock person’s main duty is to maintain merchandise availability on the sales floor. This person will be responsible for unloading trucks, pulling stock to appropriate departments for merchandise placement, facing items, rotating goods per expiration dates, and ensuring damaged or expired goods are removed from sales floor. In addition, this person will assemble displays for advertised items, assist customers during operating hours in reaching or lifting items, and assist in loss prevention.
As an entry level position, the stock person should have (but is not required) a high school education or GED, have good people skills, and be able to stand, lift, squat, and reach. The average salary for this position rests between minimum wage and $10.00 to start depending on location of the retail store. (Job Applications, 2012).
Kudler provides the opportunity for stock personnel to move up to a supervisory level in the stock/merchandising department or other positions based on experience, knowledge, and ability. Additional training will be required to include supervisory, communication, and merchandising skills and knowledge.
Specialty Department Worker
As a front line worker, a specialty department worker is focused in one department, assisting customers within that department. He or she will stock items, ensure proper pricing, may build displays for advertised items, be proactive in loss prevention, and maintain cleanliness and sanitation within that department. This position prefers a high school graduate, a person with good people skills, and the ability to communicate. The starting pay usually ranges from minimum wage to $10.00.
A specialty department worker has the opportunity to move up to department manager based on experience, desire, and ability. Additional training will be suggested towards supervisory and managerial skills and knowledge.
Department Manager
Both behind the scenes and front line, a department manager has similar duties as the store manager in that he or she is responsible for reaching department sales goals, hiring and training, performing employee evaluations, scheduling employees within the department, plans shelving displays, orders merchandise to maintain product availability, responsible for reviewing inventory and sales records for the department, “comparing record with merchandise ordered and reporting discrepancies to control costs and maintain correct inventory levels, assists customers with difficult sales, resolves problems to restore and promote good public relations, may approve checks” (CB Salary, 2012), promotes employee awareness on loss prevention, and ensures department cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
A department manager requires a high school diploma or GED, have a college degree in business or related field, have supervisory skills, the ability to communicate effectively, have good customer service skills. The compensation for a department manager has a salary range from $25,000 to $55,000, with a benefit package and possible bonuses based on overall department sales.
A department manager can move up to store manager if and when a position arises or another store opens. Additional training will be necessary to assist the manager to achieve Kudler’s maximum sales goals.
Bagger
As a front line employee, the bagger is responsible for bagging the customer’s purchases in the desired plastic or paper bags, assists cashiers with price checks, retrieving a forgotten product the customer, and assisting with carry-outs. In addition, when it is slow, the bagger will retrieve shopping carts from the parking lots, maintain store cleanliness and sanitation, be proactive in loss prevention, and assist in merchandise returns.
This position is entry level and does not require a high school diploma, but the store does prefer that the applicant has one. The employee must have good people skills, the ability to follow directions and ability to follow through, have the ability to stand, lift, and carry throughout the shift. The starting salary can range from minimum wage to $8.00 depending on location. For Kudler, a bagger may be given the opportunity to move up to stock person, department worker, or cashier depending on personal skills, knowledge, and desires.
Conclusion
Appendix A below provides a list of responsibilities for each of the six positions at Kudler Foods Retail Stores. All positions require excellent customer service, communication, and a desire to move forward personally and as a team. The pay rates are competitive for the locations and duties expected, but can be altered to fit the length of experience and abilities to the position. For any new position, Kudler has a responsibility to properly train and evaluate the employee, provide a competitive salary and compensation package, and to communicate openly the job descriptions, requirements, and opportunities to prepare for a successful organizational strategy.
