What is the relevance of psychology to management?
A definition of psychology is the characteristics of a functioning brain whose ultimate function was to control behaviour. From this we can see that there is a definite relevance of psychology to management. This is because if the management can control people’s behaviour then their staff may become more productive and therefore this will be beneficial to the company. To try to prove this I will use various psychologists’ opinions on the matter. These opinions will try to show how psychology has got relevance to management. There maybe be flaws in these opinions however which I will also show. However to do this I will need to show what a managers role can include and where they could use psychology to help them achieve these roles.
A manager of an organisation will have various tasks. Their main objective will be to make sure that the day to day running of the business goes smoothly. To do this they will have to know various things about their staff and also about psychological techniques that they can use. For instance a manger will need to know how employees behave and also how to deal with problem employees or employees with problems. Managers will also have to be able to influence employees, understand employee’s needs and make the employees work for themselves not just for the company. By this I mean that if a member of staff is just working for the money then they will never have satisfaction but if they start working to achieve things for the firm and also for themselves then job satisfaction could come their way. A psychologist called Frederick Herzberg who was looking at human resource management did a two factor hygiene and motivation theory. He found that if the staff has hygiene factors, which include the company’s policies and its administration, supervision, working conditions, inter-personal relations, salary, status and security then employees would not be dissatisfied with their jobs. However they would not be highly motivated. The motivators are achievement, recognition for achievement, interest in tasks, responsibility for enlarged task and also growth and advancement to greater levels. If the employee has some of these then they will be more motivated and therefore produce better work, which would be beneficial to the company. So if a firm tried to offer some of these factors to employees as well as making sure that all the hygiene factors are met then this is evidence according to Herzberg how psychology has an influence on management. Another psychologist called Maslow also did work on this and produced a pyramid of needs. In this he had physiological needs at the bottom and self-actualisation at the top. He believed that people’s main goal is self-actualisation but to achieve this you must reach all the other stages in the pyramid, which include safety, attachment and aesthetic needs. However there are flaws in both of these findings, which will be discussed later in the essay.
