Governments should provide legal and financial support to minority language

In contemporary society, the disappearance of minority languages is increasingly disturbing. But in the meantime, whether governments should provide legal and financial support to minority languages has sparked much debate. Some people assert that the disappearance of minority languages is normal phenomenon, so governments should not pay more attention to minority languages. While many other argue that minority languages are quite essential for anthropic culture and development, so governments should provide legal and financial support to minority language. Personally, I am in favor of the latter view, governments should provide support to minority languages.

The Definition of Minority languages in international law are traditionally used within a given territory of a State by nationals of that State who form a group numerically smaller than the rest of the State's population and different from the official language(s) of that State. We can find some information about languages from internet and academic books. Now there are totally about 6000 kinds of languages. United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization have defined three classes of minority languages, endangered language, severely endangered language and critically endangered language. There are 632 endangered languages, and 502 severely endangered languages and 538 critically endangered language in the world. More than 750 kinds of languages have disappeared in the world. In the end of this century, there will be 3000 kinds of languages disappeared in the world. However at the same time, there are also some majority languages in the world, the top five are English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Hindi.

Convincing arguments can be made that minority languages are quite essential for anthropic culture and development. To start with, languages are tools of thinking. Because of different countries have different languages, so there are many stereotypes between different countries. Even people can translate languages, but some special part of culture we cannot translate, and these special parts are the precious features of countries. Therefore, if the different countries have the same language, they will lose the precious and special parts. Moreover, with disappearance of languages, the knowledge will disappear too.
