Bloody Sunday (1905)

An incident in St. Petersburg, Russia, where unarmed, peaceful demonstrators marching to present a petition to Tsar Nicholas II were gunned down by the Imperial Guard
Was organized by Father Gapon, who was paid by the Okhrana, the Tsarist secret police
A petition presented to the Tsar, making clear the problems and opinions of the workers, and calling for improved working conditions, fairer wages and a reduction in the working day to eight hours
Serious blunder on the part of the Okhrana, and an event with grave consequences for the Tsarist regime
Gapon's Assembly was closed down that day

New Economic Policy (1921-1922)

Lenin approved the National Economic Policy
Was a compromise with the peasants
The government would tax the peasants on a fixed percentage of their production
Promoted a free agricultural market in Russia
In this policy, peasants could grow their own crops, share with the Bolsheviks, and still have enough left over for himself and his family

Stalinism (1929–1953)

It is the political regime named after Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union
Includes an extensive use of propaganda to establish a personality cult around an absolute dictator
Refers to the brand of communist regime that dominated the Soviet Union, and the countries within the Soviet sphere of influence, during the leadership of Joseph Stalin
It usually defines the style of a government rather than an ideology
Has been used to describe regimes that fight political dissent through violence, imprisonment, and killings.

Great Famine (1891-1892)

Was initially caused by the bad weather
Affected an area of around 900,000 square miles in the Volga and central agricultural areas
Also caused by the development of railroads that raised the value of land and produce encouraged some landlords to devastate the forests, impoverish the soil, and raise the already high rents on their peasants
Government was ignorant of the famine until tax collectors reported that the peasants of the region had nothing with which to pay them
To prevent a repetition of the famine, Tolstoi provided seed and replaced horses so the peasants would be able to plant and prepare for the next harvest

Collectivization (1928-1933)

Was a policy pursued under Stalin
It was to consolidate individual land and labour into collective farms
Was regarded as the solution to the crisis in agricultural distribution (mainly in grain deliveries) and to enable the party to extend its political dominance over the remaining peasantry
Was expected to free many peasants for industrial work in the cities
By 1940 approximately ninety-seven percent of all peasant households had been collectivized and private ownership of property almost entirely eliminated
