The Low Down on Spanking

April Pennington Psyc 3620-002 February 5, 2003 The Low Down on Spanking There are many different types of discipline to choose from as a parent. Many forms are effective, but only if they are used correctly. You must also take into account the personality of the child you are attempting to control. When you are considering spanking as a means of discipline you must understand that there are right and wrong ways to administer this punishment. There are several things you do not want to do when attempting to be successful with spanking. First and foremost, you never want to spank a child out of anger. This only reinforces violent tendencies and teaches a child that it is normal to hit things out of rage. It also may lead to child abuse. If you are always hitting your child before you have had time to cool off you could possibly start to hit them without reason. Second, after you have cooled off and have had time to think, you need to evaluate the situation. The importance of evaluating the situation allows you to tell the child his exact offense. Letting the child know exactly what they have done helps to decrease the chance that the behavior will be repeated. The third thing you want to avoid when using the spanking approach is overuse. The more you spank your child the less meaning and affect it has over their behavior. If you spank your child for every

Buying a house

Buying a House Buying a house for the first time? An investment in a home may be the biggest investment you will ever make in your life. For most of us it is a dream come true. Next to choosing your spouse, choosing a place to call home is one the major decision that affects all areas of your life. If you make the wrong decision, you are in for some very unpleasant situations in the near future. If you have been renting all your life and now you are thinking of getting a place called home that you actually own, here are some useful tips that you can use to help you make that all-important decision. The first thing that you may ask yourself is, how long do you plan to stay in that location? For example if you have just moved to New York to fulfill a two year long working contract with a new company, and you are not particularly in favor of the hectic city life and have dreams of living the peaceful, carefree life of a small town, then investing a huge amount on an expensive condominium with all the paraphernalia may not be the right decision for you. If you purchase a house and then decide to move after only a short period of time, you may actually end up paying money in order to sell it! This is because the value of your home may not have appreciated enough to cover for the costs that you paid to buy the home. The next thing in buying a house is to determine what your

What exactly is success?

What exactly is success? I think everyone has their own definition and explanation of what it is. Especially in the new millenium people view success as how much money you have or how luxurious you are living. On the other hand Ralph Waldo Emerson's perception of success was based on enduring "the betrayal of false friends" and " to laugh often and much". His perception was less material. I agree more with Emerson because being successful. doesn't mean to have jewels and money. I think a successful existence in society is based more on happiness, being comfortable, and being able to make it through hard times. Being happy is one of the most important things in life. Without happiness, I don't think you can consider yourself successful. You can have all the money in the world, but if you're not happy then it's really no good. For example, J Alfred Prufrock, from "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", was a very successful man. He had a good job, but he wasn't happy with the way his life was going. He had no one to share it all with. There is no way to enjoy all the money and cars unless you're happy. If you're not happy then there is no need to keep going from day to day. Being comfortable with yourself and who you are, is also very important in being successful. Looking in the mirror is apart of a vast majority of people's lives. And if you are not comfortable

The little village behind the seven mountains

Jacob Merenyi TP1A The little village behind the seven mountains Once upon a time in a country forgotten long, long ago, there was a little village. The village were situated in the deepest wood you could ever imagine! To get to the village you had to go climb over the seven mountains, and swim over the three rivers and then of course walk through the deep forest. As you can imagine it wasn't all that easy to get to the little village, but that didn't matter because there where never any visitors there, no one outside the deep wood, the three rivers and the seven mountains knew about the little village anyway. The people who lived there had everything that they needed, and lived a happy life in their little village. The years passed on as they always had done, spring went to summer and so on, but one day everything suddenly changed, when the old wise man of the village went out into the deep forest to pick some mushrooms. Well out in the forest he saw the finest mushrooms you could ever imagine. He was just about to pick one when a little blue dwarf with a white hat, not larger than his own thumb showed himself! The dwarf jumped up on the old mans nose, (that was big enough to hold at leas 4 more of the dwarfs) and said: Please don't pick those mushrooms its mine and my friends little houses. The dwarf told the old man that he could show him another place where he could

I remember the day well.

I remember the day well. I'd had another distressed phone call from her the day before. I felt for her, I really did. She was so afraid. Afraid of herself and the very world that surrounded her. I offered to help. After all, it was my job to listen to people. How could I turn down her proposal to meet me? I couldn't. If I didn't help her, who would? At the time I had been working for the Samaritans for five years. I joined after graduating from University with a Psychology degree in my back pocket, so to speak. After leaving my student life behind, one thing I was sure I'd learnt was the importance of listening to people. The most important things God blessed us with are our ears and I had learnt how He meant for us to listen to people in times of hardship. It was a warm summer's morning as I sat alone on one of the many benches in Beddington Park. My offices lay just further along the high street and my flat a duration up the hill that was in view on the horizon. My meeting with Katherine, or should I say Katie, had caused much unwanted conflict among my work colleagues. Most were strongly against my meeting with her. My boss had called me into his office as though I was a disruptive child who played up in class. He made me perfectly aware I was taking my job into my own hands, when not required to do so. Well, not directly anyway. I stopped still, looking impassively at

Curriculum Design

Aims, Goals and Methodology of Syllabus Assessment, Needs Analysis and Evaluation. Abstract This paper explores the dynamics and dimensions of the perceivably feasible efforts aimed at remodeling the English Curriculum Design. The paper takes a significant thrust at outlining the thrusts aimed at renewing foreign language learning models while also taking into cognisance the elements of the language curriculum. The proliferation of knowledge contributions around the bodies of knowledge which include education and language learning and acquisition necessitates that the current English curriculum designs be reviewed in the object of identifying areas that need modification or complete overhaul. This has to be done in the holistic efforts aimed at enhancing the language education designs in the direction of enhancing effectiveness and ensuring the fulfillment of learner's needs and educators' expectations. Badger, R, et al. (2000) quote Rod Ellis who articulates that, "...the learning process is path of discovery which obtains spontaneously and routinely only if particular conditions have been met." The foregoing can be aptly applied to the learning of the English language. The effective and successful delivery of knowledge in English language learning environs demands that particular conditions be established and fulfilled from all dimensions in ways of putting the teachers'

Original writing - Boredom.

Henry Miller Boredom I think it's necessary to inform you of the basics of my life first of all: I am English and I am originally from England. My first home was situated there and I lived there for about 7 years. When I was seven, my parents decided to relocate my family to a country called 'Dubai' which is where I currently live at this point in time. I will live here until I am 18 years of age, which is when I will go back to England to study in some university or other. One big circle. Seeing as my family and old friends all live in England, we go back there every summer holiday to live in our old house for about two months and see everyone again. We have been doing this every holiday since we moved to Dubai, and I am in no doubt that we will continue to do so until I go back there permanently, for university. There you go; those are all the facts you need to know for the time being. Bored yet? Good, because that is the gist of my tale. These summers in England that I have been talking about are just that. Boring. So boring, in fact that the luxuries of talking to flowers or watching paint dry are made to look like activities only the highest forms of life are allowed to partake in. All right, maybe I am being a bit over-dramatic, but you get my drift - my holidays in England are not very exciting. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I don't enjoy 2 months

The sun was shining bright on us from a cloudless sky.

The sun was shining bright on us from a cloudless sky. The river was like a blue undulated area extending before us for miles. Lush green mountains and forest can also be seen surrounding the river and acting as its safety barriers, the gentle breeze that blew give a soothing feeling in an otherwise hot day. Ominous feelings never crossed our minds in that atmosphere. Only the occasional barking of the dogs accompanying their bosses, the chirping, twittering and the fluttering of the birds of the park broke silence of the place. Although it was close to the city but the atmosphere was much more pleasant and one can enjoy the unpolluted nature of the landscape. We took depth breaths of clean, fresh, pure air and get rid of the noise and hustle and bustle of the city. A long and wavy walking track was there waiting for someone to walk on it. Few party benches were there facing the river and were showing their desire to be occupied. There were some benches occupied by families and their kids. Everyone looked happy and it seemed that they were enjoying the natural beauty of that place. It was 25th of August. A very special day for me: my birthday. My small group of friends, Sara, Sidra and Simpy had a plan to celebrate in a full fun way. According to the decide plan we had to meet in front of the Saint Lawrence River just opposite to Cornwall Square at 5:00 pm. I left home at

When my Mother was seven and half months pregnant with me she accidentally threw herself down a flight of stairs.

When my Mother was seven and half months pregnant with me she accidentally threw herself down a flight of stairs. She hoped that I would die in the accident and she would be able to continue her life without the burden of a child she had never wanted. What she didn't anticipate was breaking her neck at the bottom. She was rushed to the hospital almost immediately, but it was too late. I, however, was salvaged from her train wreck body. Sometimes I wish she'd had an abortion; I wish I wouldn't have been given the opportunity to grow up gangly and purple and acid-like. Grandma takes out her old shoeboxes of photographs and dumps them into my lap, claiming the two of us looked just alike, my Mother and I. I prod the dark spots under my eyes and wonder if she got as tired of Grandma as I do. Grandma looks worn, like a towel that's been through the laundry too many times, all knotted-unraveling and gray. You can't say that, though, cause she'd like as not die of a broken heart right then and there. Her eyes are wise and smoldering, changing from green to yellow like autumn leaves. Around them are wrinkles, networks of worry, a road map of suffering. Her hair is coloured bright red, jagged locks shooting out from her head as though an electric current has passed through her body. She dresses just like her mother did, and tells me one day I will, too. Did my Mother wear crumpled

Creative Writing

I'm Mileva Einstein who was the unfortunate woman who married Albert at Bern City Hall on January 6, 1903. Although he was 4 years younger than me, I fell truly and deeply in love with him. Mesmerised by his infectious smile and outstanding intelligence. Our marriage was a match made in heaven. Everything about Albert was perfect. He lit up a room with his contagious laughter and his manly presence. People just warmed to his eccentric manner. As his wife I was proud to have him as my husband. Everybody has heard of Albert Einstein. Anybody who has not been living in a vacuum for the last 100 years has heard of Albert Einstein. But only I was one of the few that REALLY new Albert Einstein. However as his familiarity rose, so did his ego not to mention his crazy mad hair. The writing was on the wall; our marriage was cracking at the seams. In the beginning he always had time for me. He was different from other husbands. He was not expectant of me. He engaged in frivolous conversation. He bought me flowers, the occasional chocolates. Every few months he would save some of his wages and take me to an extravagant restaurant where we would pretend we were of high society and that money was no object. He never got cross and always seemed pleased to be with me, even if our home was far from being tidy and we had a mountain of washing taking shape in the front room. Soon
