My Chosen topic area is women and film and what I aim to find out from this primary research is "how women are represented in action adventure films" by contrasting and comparing action films: G.I. Jane, Tomb Raider and Charlie's Angels.

I have undertaken an interview with Greg, a films studies lecturer who would have a detailed knowledge about films, the history of action adventure, and also have seen a wide range of action adventure movies. I have interviewed him with detailed questions about how he thinks women are represented in films I am researching such as G.I. Jane, Tomb Raider and Charlie's Angels and about general action films which contain heroines. I think the interview has been helpful in helping me answer my problematic as it is very detailed and specific to my problematic and also that it is from another person who is specialised in film therefore I was able to ask detailed questions such as about Laura Mulvey's theory of "Visual Pleasure in Cinema". I have used this form of primary research because it would allow me to find out another persons specific opinion on "how women are represented in action films" and as it is a film teacher who would have a specific knowledge of women and film and how women are treated in films it would be very helpful to my research. The film teacher is 20+ and is also male so I could ask him if the films with the sexy heroines would attract a large male based audience to satisfy the male gaze. The questions I have asked were specific to my research such as "Which films would you overall rate the highest: G.I. Jane, Tomb Raider, or Charlies Angels, Why is this, does it have anything to do with how the heroines are represented in the film?" which has allowed me to have a detailed and specific answer about the film which they rated highest and then a supporting explanation about the heroines used have effected their opinion on the film they rated the highest. I was also able to use film theory to ask specific questions such as "Laura Mulvey says that the hero is 'the figure in the landscape' which advances the narrative, while the woman is the 'object to be looked at', do you think this is the opposite with tomb raider and charlies angels?" And expand upon it for a explanation "why do you think this is?"

I think that this primary research method has been effective in helping to answer my problematic. This is because I have interviewed a person who has a large knowledge of film and would know a lot of film theory. I think the primary research could have been improved if I have also interviewed another film teacher of a different sex to have a different, female view on how women are represented in the action films. Since Greg has not seen Tomb Raider, this would have been a disadvantage since I am comparing and contrasting the three films without ...
