Will and Markus grow close during the film, at the beginning Will finds Markus uninteresting but by the time the film is over they have a strong relationship. ‘Every man is an island. I stand by that, but clearly some men are island chains. Underneath, they are connected.’ This implies that Will recognises that him and Markus are gradually getting closely like family e.g. father and son.
I would never have thought a twelve year old and a thirty eight year old could become best friends when not family! Well this just proves how extraordinary this film is.
This film covers a wide range of issues from suicide and love to wealth and single parenting. This is what keeps the film enjoyable. If the whole film was about serious issues this would be unbelievably boring.
During the film Markus says ‘I killed a duck’ this add humour to the film, then swoops scenes back to a serious issue of Fiona trying to harm herself. When the film uses this method it keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat so you can’t take your eyes away from the television. This is why I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
Personally I really enjoyed this powerful film, I think that there is always something attention grabbing happening whether it is funny or incredibly serious. The film covers many issues: bullying, suicide, single parenting and mental illness, this made the room go silent but kept you engrossed in the film. These issues made you feel closer to the characters for the reason that it feels like you know exactly what was going through their minds. ‘I am an Island. I am bloody Ibiza!’ This shows that he is telling us how he personally feels. Other subjects: love, wealth, family, meeting new people and relationships made me smile and laugh.
This is a story about a young boy who grows up with nothing going for him but realises with some help from a ‘friend’ and changes this. This friend goes through a lot to help Markus change and learn how to make other friends his own age.
The film ends in the best possible way, with love, friendship and exactly how you would want it too. Markus goes through a tough time at home and school but the film ends with his life sorted; his mum is happy, he enjoys school and he has friends.
People who enjoy romance, action and adventure would enjoy this film because it has mixtures of all these genres included.
I would give this film four stars because when you are watching the film you can barely take your eyes of the screen, as the film is so intense with all that happens during the film.
