Additional comments: Fast food services can provide benefits to mental health and time management of community members, but in the long run the poor physical health associated with eating fast food will be far greater than that of the short term gains. Additionally, the availability of fast food retails may contribute to the development of deficiency diseases and increased morbidity.
E. Schools
There are two public universities in Newnham, University of Tasmania (UTAS) and Australian Maritime College (AMC). The physical qualities of universities’ areas are well maintained.
Contributing to health:
- The availability of universities plays fundamental role in both personal and social development.
- Universities area can be inform as a safe place to study and to live.
-
There is no graffiti evident in and around the schools. It can be indicating that there is ‘no crime’ and no danger in the universities area. In addition, graffiti can be seen as a physical symptom of neighbourhood decline such as there might be an angry and fearful people live around a certain environmen4.
-
Uni gym and sport facilities are available in the universities. Most believes that when sports facilities are available, people are more likely to act on their positive habits. Sport facilities give positive media to promote healthy lifestyle for UTAS and AMC domestic and International students.
Inhibiting to health:
When students leave home, they are left to assume primary responsibility for their health. First-year students experience many changes, including coping with being away from family and friends and with a new environment. It is during this transition that students have an increased risk for making unhealthy lifestyle choices.
F. Religion (Table 2)
- There are 7 churches in Newhnam including Newnham church of Christ, The Uniting, Apostolic Family, St. Barnabas, Chinese Methodist, Riverside gospel chapel, and Salvation Army church.
-
In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for religious affiliation for persons usually resident in Newnham (Suburb) were Anglican5. As mentioned above, Newnham is ‘label’ as university area with many International students, so the international students have different beliefs such as Hindu, Buddha, and Islam. There is one mosque in Newnham located in the university area but there is no temple.
-
Many reports scarcely mention the impact of religion and religious participation on health. It has been argued that religion is not a true determinant of health because its effects are explainable through pathways such as a sense of belonging and social support. There is indication that participation in religious activities, and perhaps even some kinds of spirituality, are linked to better health outcomes6.
- At one level, this is obvious, since some religious groups explicitly discourage, smoking and the use of alcohol and drugs, and religious participation often gives people a community providing instrumental and social support. But the effects probably transcend these pathways.

I. Protective Services
J. Neighbourhood life (Table 3)
Inhibiting to health:
- Neighbours do not know each other very well, so it can impact the community health because they do not have a social life between their ‘close’ environments (neighbours). Meanwhile, healthy life also means having good social life. According to Birch (1993, p.1) says that “ a basic human striving and need is the need to relate, relating to oneself, to other living creatures, and to the world”
- All the sign is in English, it can create misunderstanding and stress for the community who has English as their second language.
Contributing to health:
- Newnham area has label as ‘university area’ with high levels of international students and its considerable ethnic diversity show heterogeneity in many aspects. The race/ethnicity is seen as an urban amenity rather than a stigma. This perception promotes social harmony by reducing social and racial tensions, encourage cultural cross-fertilisation and equality of opportunity. It can decrease the stress level and contributes to a greater feeling for social acceptance. Clearly, it is providing good neighbourhood life especially for International student.
