Analysis of the film Babel

Analysis of the film Babel Title: provide a detailed analysis of a recent film or broadcast that the text can be said to be original and/or innovative. The text of Babel can be said to be innovative, especially the use of combining highly different stories into a single concept. Four separate stories are continued throughout the film but one connects with each other implicitly. The first story is about two Moroccan goatherding boys and the gun which their father owns. The younger boys while playing shoots towards a tour bus, which brings the audience into a second story about the American couple who were on holiday. The other two stories are about the Japanese school girl Chieko and the Mexican nanny Amelia. They seem less directly concerned with the above stories in the first half of the film. The audience are only able to connect the stories together when the film nearly ends, where they see that Chieko's father is the original owner of the gun, and the children who are being taken care of by Amelia are the American couple's children. The director presents four highly different story lines and makes the audience gradually aware of the interdependence of the stories, giving a sense of mystery and revelation to the viewer. Babel presents an alternative to normal theories of film narrative. Firstly, it has no obvious hero or villain as Propp suggests. In each story, even

"Return to the tower of Babel, English is becoming the language of world communication, to what extent is this march towards a single world language useful or desirable."

"Return to the tower of Babel, English is becoming the language of world communication, to what extent is this march towards a single world language useful or desirable." Palna Patel 5/9/2007 English is the mother tongue in about 40 countries, and around 1.6 billion use some form of English today. The most commonly spoken language is Chinese, but English has inarguable achieved a sort of global status, it is the language of most people communicate in, and is the main language of the Internet. However it is not likely going to become a global, single, world language since the majority of the world's population do not speak it at all. The Internet's users use it for entertainment, research, information, and education; this means that most developed countries have access to the Internet and thus speaking or understanding some form of English. The importance of this language and its worldwide spread came from the early imperialism of England. Also most of the world's powerful nations such as USA and England have this national language. These countries hold an economic and political importance in the world. The march towards a single language could easily be thrown off track if another powerful nation such as China suddenly received global power, since Chinese is the most commonly spoken language it would be easier to adopt by other countries. The disadvantage of this would be

the eiffel tower

THE EIFFEL TOWER I am going to talk to you about one of the world's most outstanding pieces of architecture. Today what is known to be one of the worlds's most sticking tourist attractions lies in the center of pairs. Named after its designer Gustave Eiffel it attracts an average of 6 1/2 millions people per year. The Eiffel tower. During its time of construction the tower was once the tallest building on earth and retained its title until 1930. From the construction of the tower to the finished product the Eiffel tower truly is an amazing structure. The Eiffel tower was built from January 1887 to March 1889. The tower was built as the entrance arch for French Revolution. Out of the 700 proposals submitted in a design competition, a radical creation from the French structural engineer Gustave Eiffel was chosen. Who is Gustave Eiffel you may ask. Gustave Eiffel, born in Dijon, France in 1832, and died in 1923, was a famous engineer who founded and developed a company specializing in metal structural work. Eiffel's company also created and designed the statue of liberty, which now stands in Manhattan, in New York. Originally, the Eiffel Tower had a permit to stand for 20 years. In 1909 it nearly got demolished; thankfully for us it was allowed to remain due to its valued communications purposes. The Eiffel Tower it is an iron tower built on the Champ de Mars beside the

Tower of terror

Tower of terror Darkness swooped over me as the doors to death became closer. The pool of blood in which I lay was sticky and viscous almost as if gluing me to the floor. I could no longer move! Panic, fear, loneliness, pain and anger simultaneously engulfed me in streams of thought I could no longer process. What happened? How did I get here? Then it all came rushing back............. "Hey Alisha wait for me!" I turned around to see my best-friend gasping as she ran behind me shouting, sweaty, red and panting with her red curly hair, bouncing as much as ever. "Hi Tanya", I muffled as I gave my best friend a big hug. Since I started going out with Max I had rarely spent time with her. The truth is I missed her, but was totally fascinated by the new boy in town, Max. I had met him a month ago and it seemed like we were dating for years, he was an easy-going down-to-earth kind of guy, intellectual and also carried himself with a hint of mysteriousness. Most strikingly were his Spanish/Italian looks, tanned skin, which always glowed, long brown hair and the most dreamy green eyes which almost all the girls in the school had fallen for. Although he looked like he had emerged right out of the 70's, he was cuter and smarter than most of the guys in Mill Valley. He was almost too good to be true but I was not complaining, although Tanya was! "Hello stranger, so you do

Skeleton Tower Investigation

Aim A skeleton tower is made up of a stack of cubes with 4 triangular wings on each long face of the cube. Different towers have different numbers of total cubes and the aim of the investigation was to find an nth term and explain the reasons behind it. Towers Tower 1 - 1 cube in centre O in wings Tower 2 - 2 cubes in centre on each wing 4 on wings Tower 3 - 3 cubes in centre 3 on each wing 2 on wings Tower 4 - 4 cubes in centre 6 on each wing 24 on wings Tower No. No. in central stack No. in each wing Total no. in wings Total no. of cubes 0 0 2 2 4 6 3 3 3 2 5 4 4 6 24 28 6 6 5 60 66 2 2 66 264 276 nth Term and Proof For Tower No.6 I counted the cubes in one section (15 for a 6-high tower), multiplied that by 4 since there were four sections (60 for a 6-high tower), and then added the cubes in the middle stack (66 for a 6-high tower). I repeated this procedure for a 12-high tower (66 cubes per section, 264 cubes on wings and 276 total cubes). Using the results I worked out an nth term for the Skeleton Tower: 2n² - n This rule can be proved as two 'arms' unite to form a rectangle with dimensions n by (n-1). There are four arms for the tower so this has to be multiplied by 2 and the center column is added and it has n blocks: The formula 2(n (n-1)) + n is simplified to equal 2n² - n For Tower No.6 = 6 x 5 = 30 30 x 2 = 60

The Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower Reactions and Recommendations The Eiffel tower was designed in 1889 as the tallest structure in the world at the time (985 feet) and described as a "... 300m flagpole" by its designer, Gustave Eiffel (http://www.paris.org). The Eiffel tower is one of the most recognized and visited structural attractions in Europe (http://www.tour-eiffel.fr), with over 200 million visitors since it's inception (http://www.tour-eiffel.fr). During the past three years the tower has been affected by many global events, some of which have had a good affect whilst others have been detrimental. It can definitely be said that global events over the past 3 years have been very tough for tourism. International incidents affecting tourism have included the events of September 11, a global economic downturn caused by the accounting frauds at Enron, Parmalat, WorldCom and others, the war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq, SARS and mad cow disease. Many of these are have not directly affected the tower but have caused a slow down in the numbers of tourists and people traveling abroad, especially visitors from the US. There have also been some positive aspects which include the introduction of the Euro in 2002 which homogenized travel between European countries participating in the Euro. Whatever the affect, the towers administrators have had to react to ensure the Eiffel Tower has a

water Cooling tower

WATER COOLING TOWER SUMMARY The generic term cooling tower is used to describe both direct(open circuit) and indirect(closed circuit).A cooling tower is a heat rejection device, which extracts waste heat to the atmosphere though the cooling of a water stream to a lower temperature. The type of heat rejection in a cooling tower is termed "evaporative" in that it allows a small portion of the water being cooled to evaporate into a moving air stream to provide significant cooling to the rest of that water stream. The heat from the water stream transferred to the air stream raises the air's temperature and its relative humidity to 100%, and this air is discharged to the atmosphere. Evaporative heat rejection devices such as cooling towers are commonly used to provide significantly lower water temperatures than achievable with "air cooled" or "dry" heat rejection devices, like the radiator in a car, thereby achieving more cost-effective and energy efficient operation of systems in need of cooling. Think of the times you've seen something hot be rapidly cooled by putting water on it, which evaporates, cooling rapidly, such as an overheated car radiator. The cooling potential of a wet surface is much better than a dry one1. Cooling towers use evaporation of water to reject heat from processes such as cooling the circulating water used in oil refineries and power plants, building

The Black Tower

The Black Tower The cool breeze from the sea blows into my dry, tired face. The sun is pouring its heat on me as angry as a bull and sweat trickles from me as if I was a cloud and it was raining. The monkeys of the island surrounded around me ready to go with me. I can see the ship sailing against the waves in an attempt to come to shore and save me. I am on the Black Tower and have sent the distress signal and that's how the ship came for me. The Black Tower...... March 16, 2020 I was washed onto the island from the force of the waves. I was feeling depressed and sad that Mother Nature decided to save me because I wanted to die after what happened to me on my ship. I had to jump off the ship because the sailors and passengers were racist towards me because of my skin. They taunted me and treated me as I was their slave. They were on the verge of pouncing on me like a pack of hungry hounds but I decided to jump and maybe prolong my depressed and sad living. I was saved though and thought that I should make the most of it. All I saw in front of me was an endless sea of sand. The sea of water surrounding the island was as clear as glass and tiny fish the size of a rice grain swam between the rocks. It was a comparison of night and day from the clarity of the sea when I was on the ship. The other feature that struck my mind was the tower that projected itself out from the

Analysis of Shower Scene and Tower Scene

Analysis of Shower Scene and Tower Scene The shower scene in Psycho and the tower scene in Vertigo vastly compare, through Alfred Hitchcock's uses of cinematography, music, lighting and the acting of the characters. All of which create effective amounts of suspense and tension within these scenes. In the shower scene, Hitchcock's use of a close-shot conveys immense terror in Marion as we as the audience can visualise the true extent of her suffering. Likewise, in vertigo, as "Madeline" runs up the tower stairs and the reality of the situation hits Johnny, the close up expression of his anxiety and fear become apparent, linking to that of Marion's. In both reaction-shots, by seeing the characters in distressing conditions, we begin to feel fear and anxiety with them and come to terms with how terrible the situation is and how much tension is in the atmosphere. Hitchcock uses the low-angle shot in the tower scene to effectively make the tower appear larger than it already is, thus also making it seem more threatening. The scene being a POV shot shows that we are viewing the tower through Johnny's perspective, and the fact that it is made to look taller gives the impression that Johnny's vertigo is already occurring before he has entered the tower. In psycho, the silhouette shot of Marion's murderer is also taken from a lower angle, which subsequently makes the killer seem

Internal and external labour market: TOWER OF LONDON

4.2 Task2 (e2) Internal and external labour market Internal labour market The internal labour market deals with the Tower of London looking to employ people within the business. They can be done by employees get promoted to higher positions or move to different stores. It can also plan to its workforce. Weather the Tower of London can meet its future workforce requirement from existing employees may depend on a number of factors. An example of this is when the Tower of London promotes a member staff to a higher position. External labour market This is when the Tower of London look to plan to employ workers from outside the organisation. There are also local and national factors that have to be taken into account by the Tower of London when planning its external employee requirements. The Tower of London would be interested in the local unemployment rates. Unemployment is the internationally agreed definition of unemployment. The International Labour Organisation - an agency of the United Nations, recommends it. Under ILO guidelines, all people aged 16 and over can be classified into one of three states: in employment; ILO unemployed; or economically inactive. Fig 1.1 Above you can see that the unemployment rate shows that, the unemployment is low. The Tower of London would also look at the employment rates. Employment Statistics on employment tell us how many
