Tyrone is now very angry and he starts to rap saying how angry he is and how no one understands how much he loves dancing. His voice is now very strong and hard and you can see he’s angry by the way he is rapping. His body language is threatening and he walks up to her and circles her as if he wanted a fight.
When the rap is over he starts to walk out, but then he pauses. He turns back to Iris and he’s no longer angry. He walks back up to her and apologises. You can see he’s calmed down because his tone of voice is quieter and slower, and is body language is no longer threatening.
Iris doesn’t respond to his apology and is still in a mood. Her facial expression and body language is still the same.
Tyrone tries to show her that he has been trying and gets a book out of his bag and reads her a passage hoping this will impress her into liking him again.
You can see by Iris’s facial expression that she is shocked, and feels guilty but she doesn’t like to be proved wrong because she is still proud so she acts like she’s still in a mood with him.
Tyrone now tries to coax her into dancing by playful nudging. He puts on his cheeky smile to try to win her over.
Iris keeps pulling away, but you can see when she has her back to Tyrone but is facing the audience that she can’t help smiling.
Finally she gives in and starts laughing and dancing. There dancing becomes more serious and romantic. You can see this through the way they look into each other’s eyes and as they’re dancing becomes more professional.
B)
I found this scene very moving because there was a lot of changing emotions all in one scene.
The Audience can see Tyrone’s frustration and understands why he is angry because they know through previous scenes what he has been going through.
His change in facial expression, voice tone and exaggerated body movements while arguing shows his anger towards Iris’s attitude towards him.
The feelings that he shows when he’s angry make the audience understand his frustration.
The rap was a good choice for Tyrone to express his anger. The fast and strong rhythm, and the way he ways able to say the words in an angry way showed his strong emotions.
The dramatic pause after the rap showed the audience that he thinks about changing his mind because he is considerate of others feelings, because he goes and apologises.
When Tyrone shows Iris he’s been trying to teach himself how to read it shows that he is quite determined and does understand the fact that he needs his education to become successful. This makes the audience warm to him because of his determination and his ability to overcome self-pride.
The audience may think that Iris is making a big deal out of nothing, and is being selfish by not letting go of her self-pride because he’s proved her wrong. Iris’s haughty character shows she was brought up to think that anyone without a good education is a loser. She likes Tyrone and doesn’t really think he’s a loser she is just going by how she was brought up.
Tyrone gets her to forgive him by making her laugh and bringing back the character that amuses the audience so much. He changes the mood of the scene altogether by tempting Iris to dance, the thing they like doing the most.
At the end of the scene when they finally make up the audience is satisfied that Tyrone has finally sorted out his problems because the scene ends on a happy note.
The scenery that they used for this play was effective because it was all very simple meaning the main focus was on the two characters. The Dancing Studio was the place where they first met and a place where they both have something in common despite their argument. The dancing is what finally brings them back together because it’s what they both love.
