Sea level is related to the continuous increase of the average temperature. However, what are the impacts of the rises of the sea level towards our earth? The rises of the sea level will bring negative effects to the world especially to the low-lying coastal areas. The residents which staying at a small island and low-lying coastal areas may expose to the high risk as the average temperature continue increases. Flooding may frequently happen at this area and results to soil erosion especially during raining season. Flooding may destroy crops and to the losses of the nutrient in the soil. As a result, citizens who live in those islands may face a shortage of food. Soil erosion may affect the water quality as well as damage the drainage system. It is even worst when the whole island submerge due to the rises of the sea level. This eventually causes the island’s citizens loss their home, properties or even their lives. (Hay, J. H. & Mimura, N., 2006)
At the present time, the effects of greenhouse gases to the environment also become one of the issues that we concern about. Greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and others gases. (Thomas, C, S. n.d.) These gases allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere freely. Some of the sunlight will be deflected by the outer atmosphere and scattered back into space as infrared radiation. Besides that, some of the infrared energy will be absorbed by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which re-emit the energy in all directions while others will further warm the Earth. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) causes the depletion of ozone layer and usually is released from refrigerator and air conditioner. While Carbon dioxide (CO2) can be emitted naturally through the carbon cycle and through human activities like emission gases from vehicles and the burning of fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas causes the increase of global temperature. Thus, bring environment pollutions to us and produce even more greenhouse gases.
Although it is difficult for us to eliminate this problem in the short period, but we can try to participate ourselves in order to prevent the climate change of the environment. Here are several solutions to solve the global warming, the rise of the sea level and greenhouse effect. We are encouraged to plant more trees to reduce the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. We are able to make a difference by giving awareness among the society to plant more trees for the purpose of saving our earth. It only works as more and more people involved in this meaningful activity. We have to bear in mind that it is useless without the cooperation among the society. Carbon dioxide can be reduced through the process of photosynthesis. The reduction of carbon dioxide will reduce the amount of heat that being absorbed in the atmosphere. As a result, planting more trees will be able to reduce the rise of the average temperature, thus reduce the global warning.
Besides planting trees, we can also protect our earth by reducing the usage of car. Since the motor vehicles are a major cause of the rises of the air pollution especially in a development country. The gases that exhaust from vehicles will increase the average temperature of the environment. We should always use public transportation or car pool with others so that we can reduce the exhaust gases from vehicle. If the distance to our destination is near, we should walk or cycling a bicycle. It is an effective way to reduce the pollution and reduce global warming. Otherwise, we should use or buy a fuel-efficient car. The global warming pollution even can cut down 30% as driving a new hybrid car with using efficient gas-electric engines. (Greg, S., 2009)
At the same time, we can save our earth by reduce the usage of electricity in our daily life. We should switch off light and other unnecessary switcher when we are not using it. Besides that, we should reduce the usage of air-conditioner and refrigerator to decrease the number of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) released. In the present day, every house may have at least one air-conditional. We should limit the time to use air conditioner and switch it off when the weather is cold or windy. Moreover, recycling activities should be practiced. We can always practice this activities at home or school. Every school should encourage the students to carry out this activity by conducting recycling campaign and give rewards or prizes to those classes that do well in this recycling activity.
In order to avoid the climate change problem by getting worse, institutions and individuals must act now. Everyone has the responsibility and should do their part to protect and save the earth. We can make the difference since the fate of our planet is in our hands.
