Why did war break out in Europe in 1939?

When Hitler came to power in Germany 1933, he wanted to abolish the Treaty of Versailles, expand German territory. Hitler believed that the Treaty of Versailles was unjust. “We demand equality of rights for the German people in its dealings with other nations, and abolition of the peace Treaties of Versailles and St Germain” This was written from Hitler’s Mein Kampf. Hitler thoughts about the Treaty were that it was reminder of their defeat in the First World War and the humiliation from the Allies. In order to change this, he said to the Germans that if he comes to power then the terms could be changed. Another aim in Hitler’s plan was to expand German territory. He wanted to unite with Austria and Czechoslovakia to rejoin with Germany. He felt that the Austria and Czechoslovakia belonged to Germans and should join together to make the German Nation.

In the 1930s there were two incidents that really test the League of Nations, the Manchuria Crisis and the Abyssinia Crisis. In 1931 Japan was criticised by the League of Nations but no action was taken to stop Japanese aggression. It all started when Japanese economy grew rapidly, it had a very strong army and navy, strong industry especially exporting goods to the USA and China in particular. The League had to be careful about this because Japan was a leading member of the League. China appealed to the League but the Japanese argued that China was in such a state of anarchy that they had to invade in self-defense to keep peace in the area.

It took a full year after the invasion for the League to be able to present their report. In February 1933, Japanese announced to invade more of China. They still said it was a self-defense. The League was approved by 42 votes to 1 in the Assembly (The 1 was Japan). The League could not do anything. Smarting at the insult, Japan resigned from the League. IT failed the major test.
