Other support groups such as citizen’s advice bureau and NHS direct help the prisoner with any issues which they have such as advice on how to get a job they also are there to give information on certain things that which the prisoner might want to know about.
In order for the prisoners to rehabilitate, the prison officers would need to be supportive and encouraging the prisoner into positive behaviour. Due to different prison officers working in different sections of the prison such as the education, health and rehabilitation departments, the prison officers would have to liaise closely to help the prisoner’s rehabilitation programmes to work properly.
In every prison there are 13 different types of programmes which help the prisoners whilst they are serving their sentence. These programmes, which are provided to the prisoner, help them to develop their integration, communication and relationship skills before they integrate back into society.
An example of one of these programmes is the healthy relationships programme also known as the ‘hrp’. The healthy relationships programme is mainly designed for the male offenders which have a history of violent or abusive domestic behaviour who are viewed as a risk for repeated violent behaviour in their future relationships.
Another example is the ‘one-to-one programme’. This programme, with the use of some psychological and social methods, helps the offenders to change their thoughts, attitudes and standards that contribute to offending behaviour in the future.
These types of programmes which help the development of positive relationships benefit both the society as well as the individual. The way that the programmes benefit the society is that the programmes help offenders to not reoffend once they have been let back into the society. There are many reasons such as poor thinking and the problem solving skills, which lead to offenders reoffending. Some people tend to reoffend because they can’t find any work. The reason for this is because they have criminal records which make it hard for them to find a job. However there are programmes which help the offender in that category of how to be successful in finding a job outside prison.
Some of the prisoners get their sentence cut short as a deal. The deal usually works both ways as it benefits the society as well as the prisoner. Usually in a typical scenario the prisoner would have to visit schools and give speeches about crime to the pupils of the school. This benefits the society because it helps the children to realise that crime in the society isn’t good and has bad consequences. It benefits the prisoner because they get to be realised earlier from prison.
Helping people to not reoffend helps the society in the way which it would keep crime levels low and the public wouldn’t feel scared of crime. Also the positive relationships that the prison officers have with the prisoners would help them to develop with their personality which could also help them in the society in making friends and other relationships of such that they would face whilst outside the prison. These would help the society to be safer and a friendlier environment.
However with all the programmes that the prison service offers to the prisoners, the current reoffending rate is very high. This shows that the rehabilitation programmes aren’t working as they should. I think in order for the prison services rehabilitation programmes to work they would need to improve the quality of the programmes.
There are several different ways which offending behaviour is addressed by the individuals before they are realised from custody. I think that one of the best method is to let the prisoners to reflect on the crime which they committed in order for them to get into prison also they would say how they feel about the crime. This would allow the prisoner to think about the crime and see why crime is wrong and realise what they have caused to others through their behaviour. They could also see what they could have done instead of committing the crime to solve their issue. However the bad affect that this could leave on the prisoner is that it could make the prisoner go through stress and depression when thinking about the past.
Another positive thing about addressing the offending behaviour is that the prisoners can use the rehabilitation programmes as a new start to life and could start thinking ways they could improve their future such as employment, education or basic relationships with their family members. Also their behaviour once they have been through certain programmes would be different from when they first entered the prison, typically in a positive manor. This would help the prisoner to bond with others.
However sometimes when a prisoner thinks that they don’t need to be rehabilitated and gets offered the service, they would feel that the prison officers are being unfair to them and treating them badly. This could cause conflict with the prisoner and the prison office or at worst cause conflict within the programme group. Also many tax payers and victims of crime believe that tax money could be spent for a better cause then help rehabilitate the prisoners.
