Consider the range of new sounds explored in the 20th Century music; refer to specific works by Boulez and developments in terms of writing for vocal, and music technology. Out of all the 20th Century Composers, Boulez has a reputation as one of the most passionate, precise and innovative. After inspiration from Schoenberg's 12 tone system and his application and development of total serialism; Boulez has produced some of the most progressive and experimental music that the last century has witnessed. Boulez started his musical career studying music in Paris and composition under Messian, before this he was studying mathematics as this was his other love. Through a desire to combine mathematics and music he developed techniques of composition, based on the twelve tone system and mathematical techniques. In "structures la" Boulez uses a 12 by 12 (matrix or grid) based on an original series of notes and inversions of this series from his predecessor Messian's piece "Mode de Valeurs et d'intensités" He plotted paths through this matrix and this decided all elements of the music, this is what Boulez describes as creation by experimentation and experimentation by creation. He believes in as he can not expect to know what he is composing otherwise he will not be creating something completely new and feels he needs to surprise even him self. Boulez's love of mathematics and music

Francesca Da Rimini

Anne Chen p. 2 9.16.08 Francesca da Rimini: Symphonic Fantasia after Dante, Op. 32 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed this symphonic poem in a mere 3 weeks. Under the suggestion of the music critic, Henry Laroche, Tchaikovsky created this symphonic work on the most famous incident in Dante's Divine Comedy - the tragedy of Francesca and Paolo. Tchaikovsky dubbed this piece as a "symphonic fantasy." On a letter to his brother, he wrote, "I have worked on it con amore, and I believe my love has been successful." It was indeed an instant sensation. The symphonic fantasy premiered in Moscow on March 9, 1877. The first performance was received with much enthusiasm despite the fact that it was just five days after the premiere of Swan Lake. On YouTube, I enjoyed the vibrant air with which Gustavo Dudamel conducted to his Symphonic Orchestra of Venezuela. Although this recent performance in 2007 paled in comparison to Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra's concert, I believe that it was nevertheless well orchestrated and portrayed Dante's story with clarity. In terms of music and theme, this piece shows a prominent influence of Liszt. Liszt's compositions oftentimes illustrate a gothic and devilish air which is much like the aura of Francesca da Ramini by Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky's depiction of the flames of hell with the usage of swirling chromaticism can also be traced

Investigating the music and dance of the period in The Great Gatsby

Habibat Aziz Garuba ORAL PRESENTATION ESSAY OUTLINE Topic: Investigating the music and dance of the period in The Great Gatsby Main Statement The 1920's were known as the Jazz Age. It was also an era of social, economic and most important to this presentation, cultural change. The kind of music and dance of the Jazz Age was revolutionary and showed how society had much changed and become less conservative. Entertainment of that sense was more upbeat. Even music and dance were seen as a powerful symbol of social status as well as a symbol of the decline of the American Dream. * Fitzgerald captured all three into one novel, The Great Gatsby. * In that age, it was possible to tell much about people by the parties they hosted and those they attended. Such occasions determined who's who in society by looking at their tastes, their social status, their friends, and their lifestyles. * People made assumptions about Gatsby's character by observing the kinds of parties he hosted which would include wild music and dance as well as guests who "conducted themselves according to the rules of behaviour of amusement parks". * Symbolism of dance - Daisy and Gatsby danced. He did a fox trot, which is a graceful, conservative dance. Says something about his character. * The explosion in the popularity of Jazz music was appalling to the older generation and quite appealing to the

The piece that I particularly liked was the first piece played Brusa: Missa pro defunctis.

Larisa Knyazeva Core 2.2 Professor Bierman Concert Report July 1, 2006 Music is one of the most unique performing arts due to the way it has evolved. The performance that I attended was a New England Symphonic Ensemble playing Brusa: Missa pro defuctis, Beach: The Rose of Avontown, Mozart: Mass in C Major at Carnegie Hall. The concert took place Sunday June 25, 2006 at 8:30 pm. The symphony orchestra is a collection of a variety of instruments. This symphony orchestra came in four groups of musical instruments. The first is the string family they were on the left and on the right of the stage, the second and the third groups are the woodwind and brass family were in the middle with the brass family behind the woodwind, and the fourth group is the percussions family was standing right before the choir. The piece that I particularly liked was the first piece played Brusa: Missa pro defunctis. The Soprano voice started the play and the violists were in the background. The soprano could be heard more clearly because their section seemed to be the most powerful. Then the tenor was singing his lines, and it sounded like two of them were having a loud discussion. The music was abundant in tone color and a variety of pitches and moods. The four main voices: the soprano, the tenor, the mezzo-soprano and the bass-baritone was singing against the entire orchestra. The rhythm of

Creating a Music Track in Cubase

Creating a Music Track in Cubase Jamie Maunder 12CAL Introduction: We were set the task of creating a music piece in the music software programme Cubase. Drum loop: I started by creating a drum loop for my piece. For this I used the internal drum editor. The drum editor allows you to display a pattern of various drum sounds (Bass drum, High hat, Snare drum etc...) on a grid to create the desired drum loop. Once my drum loop had been created I placed it on the pattern display area, using channel 10. Bassline: Next I inputted the Bassline for my piece. To do so I selected the channel I wanted to use (channel 1), ensured that the left and right locators were positioned correctly and double clicked within the locators to display my track. To ensure that I played the bassline in time with my drum loop I used the aid of the internal metronome located on the transport bar. I set this to a time signature of 04/04 as my drum loop also followed this signature. I then recorded my bassline by clicking record on the transport bar and playing the individual notes of my bassline for 4 bars. After recording the bassline the instrument sound can be changed. This is done by using the GM/GS/XG Editor located in the edit option at the top of the screen. I decided the best sound for my bassline would be that of a Fingered Bass. Chords: Once I was happy with the bassline I went about

Early Dance Music From Renaissance To Baroque

Music Homework Early Dance Music From Renaissance To Baroque (It has 2 main explanations I found in my dictionary and changed in to my words) End of Middle Ages: the period in European history from about the 14th through 16th centuries regarded as marking the end of the Middle Ages and featuring major cultural and artistic change Classical revival: the cultural and religious spirit that characterized the Renaissance, including the decline of Gothic architecture, the revival of classical culture, the beginnings of modern science, and geographical exploration. The new emphasis on individualism and secularism at this time led to the Reformation. Latin American Dances Salsa's and sambas are very syncopated compositions and the drums are very prominent. The dances are mainly held in festivals and carnivals and they're all extremely happy and lively styles of music. The tango is a very set dance you would picture a lady with a rose in her mouth. The texture of the music is quite thick and the tempo is quite fast also. Dance music From The Club Scene Dj-ing is becoming very well known and extremely popular, almost enough to even overtake live shows with real bands. Dj-ing and sampling are used together a lot of the time and the main features used by a dj are a set of turntables or decks with vinyl records and a synthesizer. Synths are quite old technology now but

Report to show how macros are made.

Mahmoodul Shah 27/09/02 Report to show how macros are made In this report I will be showing Angela and David Williams how to create macros. Macros are very useful because it is data that you have created and recorded via a macro, which can then be used again and again because the macro will be on the tool bar. For example if I wanted to on every piece of writing that I do I wanted to put on my name on the top left hand side and I had a macro for that it would mean that I would not have to type my name out every time. To create the macros I shall be giving one step at a time on how to create it with screen shots as well: . First of all you need to log on to your computer. Then go to Start, an then click on Microsoft Word: 2. After loading in to Microsoft word they need to go to View, click on tool bars and then click on customize: (Next page) 3. After clicking on the customize button you then click on new when the screen appears. Then another screen will appear showing the new tool bar: 4. After clicking on ok you will see a new tool bar appear: 5. Then you click on the new tool bar you will drag it up to the tool bar section and move it in: Like above. 6. You then go to tools, macro and click on record new macro: you then click on toolbars on the screen which

West End Blues – Louis Armstrong

West End Blues - Louis Armstrong Louis Armstrong and his 'hot five' would have performed this piece in the late 1920s. Ko-ko was actually composed by Joe "KING" Oliver, when Louis Armstrong was a member of King Oliver's band before it split up in 1924. Joe Oliver, cornetist, bandleader and composer, was one of the earliest influential Blues pioneers. His work was typical of the New Orleans' style, which had developed from the Black African slave chants of the cotton fields, influencing the "folk" or local popular music of the era and area. The set up of the ensemble would have been: Brass - trumpet and trombone Reed - clarinet Rhythm - piano, banjo, drums This piece starts with a solo trumpet (Armstrong) playing six bars of syncopated, rubato arpeggios and broken chords in the key of Eb major using the blue notes of the key which are F# and Db. The main 12 bar blues starts with a swung rhythm played by the trumpet and clarinet whilst the trombone plays a simple harmony. The piano provides the beat to the piece using a steady right hand harmony of blocked chords, with the tonic note in the left hand. There is not much variation in the rhythm or chord structure throughout the piece. This produces the notes of the 12-bar structure. In bar 18, the percussion changes to a syncopated 'clip clop' sound (suggested to be milk bottles) This is played for 12 bars

Calculate the stress in a beam and compare these results with actual results found

Engineering Applications Mechanics TIM BARNETT SE32403 00361755 Log entry 1 Experiment 1 The experiment is to calculate the stress in a beam and compare these results with actual results found. The equipment used: - Strain gauge Metal bar Weights in 1kg increments G-clamp Weighted hook Vichy Strain Bridge The metal bar, complete with the weighted hook is clamped to the table, and then the strain gauge is connected to the strain bridge and zeroed. So as not to get any false readings. Weights are added in 1kg increments and readings are taken off the strain bridge. This tells us how much strain the bar is under as we load it up. Results are as follows Weight loaded Strain kg 51 *10-6 2 kg 02 *10-6 3 kg 53 *10-6 4 kg 202 *10-6 5 kg 253 *10-6 As you can see the results go up uniform ally. Theory The following equations are used to calculate the final stress on the bar. Length of the bar 0.25M Width of the bar 0.04M Depth of the bar 0.006M Force = weight * gravity 1kg * 9.81 = 9.81 2kg * 9.81 =19.62 3kg * 9.81 =29.43 4kg * 9.81 =39.24 5kg * 9.81 =49.05 Mass = P * L 9.81 * 0.25 =2.45 19.62 * 0.25 =4.90 29.43 * 0.25 =7.35 39.24 * 0.25 =9.80
