‘’Evacuation was a great success’’

Do you agree or disagree with this interpretation?

Explain your answer using the sources and knowledge from your own studies.

The aims of evacuation by the British government in the Second World War were, to keep up morale by minimising infant casualties from air raids. They also wished to preserve future generations, as well as protect those most vulnerable such as the handicapped and pregnant women. The government also wanted to keep the children happy and un-scared by the horrors of war.

Source A shows a crowd of children with their mothers walking to the station in London to be evacuated to the countryside. All of the children and mothers have smiley, cheerful faces and are waving to the camera, they seem excited and happy about the thought of evacuation. I know that excitement was a common feeling shared amongst many evacuees during the Second World War. However the children and their mothers may well have been playing up to the camera, in which case this source does not express their true feelings about the thought of being split up from each other and sent to a strange place. Source D also suggests that all evacuated children are very happy and healthy in the countryside ‘And they’re healthier and happier. Perhaps they don’t say it but they certainly mean ‘Thankyou’’.  I know that the health of many children improved dramatically as they left the dirty towns, however, this was not the case for every child and certainly every child was not happier. This poster was published by the government, and is more than likely to be government propaganda.

Source F is a film released by the government. It shows a typical countryside community with both locals and evacuated town folk. It shows clips of beautiful countryside with the children running in the fields, the narrator tells us how ‘Children live half an hour from school but they enjoy themselves so much that they go to school half an hour early.’ The children are encouraged to help the war effort ‘We sew scarves for the army, sailors and airman, we planted potatoes.’  This shows tremendous community spirit that the children have learned, 1 child offers a pair of spare shoes for Tommy Brown, and some children offered to help the farmer deliver the school milk. Many children learn practical skills such as weaving that they would not learn in the town. ‘All of the children want to go for a walk in the countryside, some of the town children are scared of the animals’. This source shows several images of the children enjoying themselves and very happy, helping the war effort from the safety of the countryside. This video was made by the government for the purpose of educating parents about evacuation, and to persuade them that it is the best and safest option for their children. Parts of the film, such as the children learning new skills reflect knowledge from my own studies; however, the film has been acted out and is not a real life documentary. It is therefore very likely to be government propaganda.

A photo of young people being evacuated from 1393 show them very happy and smiling, suggesting they are excited and happy about evacuation. This source however, is not very reliable, as they may have been playing up to the camera. Once child from London who remembers evacuation says how ’everything was so clean. We were given towels and tooth brushes. We’d never cleaned our teeth till then.’ This is typical of many children evacuation, especially from the slum areas of London were living in real poverty before evacuation and their health improved greatly during evacuation. Another source exploits this fact ...
