A View From The Bridge A View From The Bridge, written by Arthur Miller, tells the story of Eddie Carbone, an Italian longshoreman living in Brooklyn, who becomes embroiled in a tragic dispute between his own family and two immigrant relations. One of the 'Submarines' named Rodolpho becomes emotionally attached to Eddie's niece- Catherine, for whom, we discover, Eddie also has strong feelings. This clash between two dominant characters ensues throughout the play, frequently leading to verbal and physical confrontations, usually over Catherine. To find out what causes this friction I will be analysing each character's motives and personality, starting with Eddie Carbone. Eddie is a hardworking man who works on the New York docks to earn for his family. He doesn't have a great education and so his vocabulary can occasionally be very poor and he uses language like; "sump'm," and grammatically incorrect phrases such as "Listen I could tell you things about Louis which you wouldn't wave to him no more". When Eddie is engaged in an argument, his speech seems to deteriorate, which angers him, as he cannot find the words to support what he wants to articulate, and ends up saying something incoherent. Catherine is a major figure in Eddie's existence, as her role is effectively as his daughter, although some may say his feelings towards her are more sexual than paternal. Whether

Discuss how Miller uses dramatic techniques to dramatise the themes in 'The Crucible'

Discuss how Miller uses dramatic techniques to dramatise the themes in ' The Crucible' Arthur Millers Drama is based on the Salem witch trials of 1692. He wrote the play much later than 1953 as an indictment of the anti-Communist tactics of Joseph McCarthy. Miller recognised there was parralel between the hysteria which swept Salem in 1692 and the anti-Communist witch hunt which raged though America during the 1950's 'Red Scare'. During reasearch I found that Miller chose this subject as it contained mass hysteria and he wanted to show what its social and psychological consequences might be, which reflected the possible consquences of the MacCarthy Era. The Language throughout the play are powerful, evocative and memorable, such as Elizabeths behaviour as 'an evalasting funeral'. How ever at important climax's such as the last few minutes of the play the languages' rythm is monosyllabic like the beat of a drum. 'What profit him to bleed? Shall the dust praise him? Shall the worms declare his truth? Got to him, take his shame!' The Crucible's strucure contains four acts where the supernatural dabblings increase into a more and more desperate situation. This structure emphasises the chaos of the play which is closely linked with the super natural theme. Aswell as the main structure, Miller has constructed a structure inside each act. This stucture is that of calm and quiet

Arthur Miller creates moments of dramatic conflict. Select any two of these and discuss their impact on the play as a whole. In the 1920s the American government passed a law that restricted illegal immigrants. Italian immigration was almost completely stopped. Only 3845 Italians were permitted to legally enter America each year. Arthur miller was particularly interested in modern day society and modern day family life. Miller, who was born in 1915, grew up in New York as part of a Jewish family. In 1983, he graduated from the University of Michigan where he had begun to distinguish himself as a playwright. His first plays were 'Hours of Dawn', in 1936, and 'No Villain', in 1937, which won the University of Michigan Hopwood Awards. In 1953, Miller wrote 'The Crucible', during the McCarthy period, when Americans were accusing each other of pro-communist beliefs. Many of Miller's friends were being attacked as communist and in 1956, Miller was brought before the House of Un-American Activities Committee where he was found guilty of communist beliefs but in 1957 the verdict was reversed in an appeals court but Miller still held communistic views. The first moments of dramatic conflict I have chosen to write about is in act one when Catherine and Rodolpho arrive home from the pictures and are 'greeted' by a rather unhappy Eddie. They have clearly had a good time as they are

English Coursework This play a View from the Bridge raises many complex issues. Like the fact, that Beatrice's cousins maybe found out by the immigration services and the fact that Eddie is overprotective over Catharine but Beatrice wants her to grow up. In addition, the way Eddie objects to Rodolpho's appearance and manner. The biggest problem Beatrice has is that there seems to be no romance in there sex life no more. She feels that there is no sex life. It becomes clear from the very beginning that Eddie has worries about his wife's visitors from Italy. He fears that Catharine maybe putting her self out too much for her guests which maybe be a little true. The reader can tell he has these concerns when eddies says "Beatrice, all I'm worried about is you got such a heart that I'll end up on the floor with you and they'll be in our bed" Act One Pg 8 This statement shows that he is not just worried about his own well being he also worried that his wife maybe to kind to notice when people are taken advantage of her. Beside that, he is worried about his reputation in his local community. He wishes to be seen as a local hero around his community, but I think as soon as he realized that his new guests maybe a threat to reputation for two reasons. The first being that Rudolph is courting Catharine and Eddie feels that inappropriate because in courting Catharine, Rudolph is

Although Marco and Rodolfo are both illegal immigrants, what are their hopes and dreams on arriving America?

Although Marco and Rodolfo are both illegal immigrants, what are their hopes and dreams on arriving America? A View from the Bridge was set in America in the late 1940. Arthur Miller was inspired to write the play by the Italian immigrants. He was very interested in their community and social background. The plot of the play was based on the reality of their living conditions. The play was set in Red Hook, a slum area where the Carbones and other Italian immigrants live. Now I would like to discuss about Marco and Rodolfo, the two illegal immigrants 's hopes and dreams of coming to America. Marco, the older brother was described as " Square - built peasant, suspicious, tender and quiet voiced." These descriptions that introduced Marco as he entered the play was show to the audiences that he is an ordinary man but strong, thoughtful and polite. When Marco starts to make speeches and comments about his reasons of coming to America, we discovered that he is very mature and reasonable. " I want to tell you - Eddie when you say go, we will go" His speech makes we see that Marco is very grateful that Eddie allows both of them to live in his place. Marco used the word " We" indicating Rodolfo to show that Rodolfo is also thankful of his kindness although the word did not come from his own mouth. This shows that Marco is more mature and more polite than Rodolfo. In his speech Marco

Look again at the end of 'The Crucible', from page 107 ' Alone Proctor walks to her, halts.' How does Miller create dramatic tension in the final section of the play? The Crucible is set in America in 1692, written by Arthur Miller in the middle of the cold war, it was made to show what happened to the people who were accused of being communists, and had to face the American Government of un-American activities committee. Arthur Miller was made to come upon the committee and in this, he was made to name other people, like in the crucible when John Proctor was in front of the court. He wrote it about witchcraft in 1692 because he could have been sent to jail if he had made it directly about the cold war. I am going to focus my essay on the conflicts between different characters or groups of characters and how Arthur Miller uses this to cause dramatic tension. There are many conflicts in the play but the main conflicts are the ones between Elizabeth Proctor and John Proctor, Abigail Williams and John Proctor and Hale and the court. The conflict between Elizabeth and John started before the play but there are clues along the way to tell us what has happened. We get told that Abigail and John had an affair and that was the reason for her being fired by the proctors as their servant. We get the feeling that Elizabeth knows about this although she doesn't want to bring out

Erin Bensley 0N Page 1 'Drama Focus' English Coursework A View From The Bridge Consider the ways in which the audience response to Eddie Carbone changes over the course of the play. Choose three sequences in which Arthur Miller presents different aspects of Eddies character. Make use of textual evidence to support your answer. Arthur Millers play 'A View From The Bridge' is set in Red Hook, a slum area, in Brooklyn in the 1950s. In the 1950s there was a thriving trade in illegal immigration, encouraged by the dockyard owners, who knew that they could get cheap labour from the immigrants until they had paid for their passage over. Arthur Miller was born into a Jewish family in New York in 1915. When the family business failed, they moved to Brooklyn, where 'A View From The Bridge' is set. He worked in the Brooklyn shipyards for two years, where he befriended the Italians he worked alongside. He heard a story of some men coming over to work illegally and being betrayed. This story inspired him to write 'A View From The Bridge' which was written in 1955. The play is a tragedy which traces the downfall of Eddie Carbone. Miller's plays make important social and political comments reflecting Miller's belief in communism. Throughout the play Eddies character changes and the audience's view of him changes as well. Eddie works at the shipyards of Brooklyn and lives with his

"Of all the characters in the play, Marco is the one most responsible for the death of Eddie Carbone" Do you agree?

An essay for A view from the bridge "Of all the characters in the play, Marco is the one most responsible for the death of Eddie Carbone" Do you agree? Consider all the characters in the play who are likely to be involved. Form your own conclusion from evidence, and use six characters minimum. I am going to write an essay about who I think is the most responsible for Eddie Carbone's death. I will also say whether I think Marco is the most responsible. I will talk about the different characters, and say what I think makes them responsible/not responsible for his death. Then I will give my conclusion as to whom I think is the most responsible. The characters that I am going to use for my essay are Marco, Eddie, Rodolfo, Alfieri, Catherine and Beatrice and I will write about them in that order. In the beginning Marco was a very nice man. He did not want to put Eddie and Beatrice out, and was always very friendly with them. There was never much conflict between himself and Eddie, they would talk about his family and how he was going to help his children get better. This is illustrated when Beatrice asks Marco if his wife is getting the money ok, and he replies "Oh, yes. She bought medicine for my boy." Also when they are talking about money in the beginning, Marco is very eager to send his wife as much money as he can, as soon as possible. He says "Because I could send them a

How are the seeds of future conflict sown in the First Act of 'The Crucible'

How are the seeds of future conflict sown in the First Act of 'The Crucible' The first words - the Crucible - of this play serve as an excellent guide to the forthcoming events of paranoia and hysteria. A crucible is an object, in which materials, often metals, are heated to extreme temperatures where they are then purified. This play shows a community in Salem, Massachusetts in the late 17th century, which ignites, and burns with accusations of witchcraft, retribution, and mass hysteria. In this essay however, I will explore the first act of the play, which forms a strong foundation for the events that are soon to spiral out of control. The first act deals with all the main characters that symbolise the ideas dealt with within the play. I shall discuss each of the characters in turn and the role that they play in 'The Crucible'. In my opinion, it is use of characters that makes a play effective, and it is important that the reader can relate to them. In this play, without the complexity of the characters and their motives, I believe that 'The Crucible' would not have such tensions, and the heights of such intensity would not be reached by the accusations of witchcraft. The setting that Miller chooses for this play is particularly important. Miller establishes at the start of Act One that life in Salem is very rigid and has a close-knit society. This quality of the

How has Arthur Miller presented the American Dream Theme in 'A View From the Bridge?'

How has Arthur Miller presented the American Dream Theme in 'A View From the Bridge?' By Luke Harris 10R/T The Online Google dictionary defines that 'The American Dream is the idea held by many in the United States of America that through hard work, courage and determination one can achieve prosperity. These were values held by many early European settlers, and have been passed on to subsequent generations.' What the American Dream has become today is a question under constant discussion. The American Dream appears to have enduring appeal to many other countries. The United States of America still has the largest intake of legal immigrants in the world at one million. Past generations of immigrants came from Europe, Latin America and Asia. Unknown members of illegal immigrants enter annually mainly via the southern border with Mexico. Arthur Miller wrote 'A View From the Bridge' in 1955 because he was appalled at the way Italian immigrants were treated by the shipyard owners. Initially they had plenty of work but after they had paid off any debts to the bosses at the shipyards they were cast aside. The immigrants literally waited on the bridge hoping for a chance of work. Miller had first hand experience of this because for a few years he worked at a dock in Brooklyn, and became friends with many Italian immigrants and their families. The play is set at Red Hook, a
