In America around 2.2 million of Americans are affected by Obsessive- Compulsive disorder. Most of OCD sufferer in America after being researched said that they can’t resist their needs of doing something repeatedly, even though they know that what they are doing doesn’t make any sense.
Next, I am going to tell the audience an example of what’s happening in OCD sufferer’s mind.
A is a sufferer of OCD, when taking a shower for example, A have this thought that germ on his body is going to eat him alive, this thought is repeated so many times that it bothers him so much. He then have to soap his body for 25 times to push away the anxious thought. A knows that his thoughts are not making any sense, but he just can’t resist the compulsion.
Then I will tell the audience about a way of knowing if you are or are not OCD sufferer.
Since I was a little until now, every time I am tapping my fingers against something, I have this thoughts that the finger I used for tapping will rot if I don’t tap my other fingers, and after tapping them, I would want to tap again for several times, just to make sure. After researching about OCD I was quite concerned if I myself have this OCD, because recently, when I have a lot of things in my mind, I would clean something until I feel that it is okay. There was this one time when I can’t sleep and I went to the kitchen of my house to grab some water, but then I found there was a spot on the glass, so I grabbed some tissue and try to scrub it really hard. And then my attention stopped at my rice cooker, coffee table, the floor and ended up not sleeping until 2 30 in the morning.
But after further research, I don’t actually have OCD. What I am experiencing is something called tics or Tourette syndrome. Because tapping my fingers didn’t really become a ritual for me.
