INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT

This project concerns the area of mathematics called statistics. The project named Mayfield high school is a statistical project. For this investigation I have acquired data from the edexcel website, this data contains information on 1183 students and gives personnel attributes such as height and weight.

AIMS OF THE INVESTIGATION

The aim of my investigation is determine a relationship between the height and weight of the various pupils of the school. From analysing both the graphs and the data I will produce from this investigation, I hope to be able to estimate an accurate figure for a pupils height or weight by being given just one of these values.

To ease the workload of the project I have sorted the data using the sort function of Microsoft excel. This means the data for my project has now been arranged chronologically by order of year group from year 7 to 11. Then it has been sorted alphabetically by order of surname and then finally by gender. This has now left me with a final set of data which I can very easily use to select 60 random people from the data using the SHIFT RAN# function of my calculator. Using this function of my calculator I have been able to select 60 random numbers, which will then correspond to the cell numbers on the spreadsheet. I will then take this data and copy it to another spreadsheet. Which I will then sort in the same fashion as I did before once this has been done I will use scatter diagrams to find a positive correlation between height and weight.

LINE OF ENQUIRY

The line of enquiry I have chosen for my investigation is the relationship between the height and the weight of the students. I have decided to choose this line of enquiry as the data I will be using will be quantitative this will enable me to be able to use the higher techniques for statistical mathematics and in turn will enable me to be able to achieve the highest possible grade for my investigation.

PROCEDURE

The procedure I will be following for my investigation is to firstly take a random sample of 60 students from the total number of students in the school. Then analyse tabulate and draw graphs for the data I will have produced. After completion of this I will then stratify the data to hopefully produce a set of data, which gives a much better correlation between the two sets of figures. I will stratify the data into different groups. Firstly I will separate the data into groups by gender then by year group and then by both year group and gender. By splitting the data into these groups and then analysing the data I will be able to achieve a much better correlation between the relationship of height and weight.
