This is the second edition of Frances Heidensohn's Women and Crime and has been carefully revised since the 1985 edition to provide the reader with a modern perspective of female offenders.  The book investigates the current status that female offenders hold within the criminal justice system and the inappropriate treatment they receive.  For readers familiar with the first edition the most apparent difference is the final chapter which gives an overview of developments and research within the female criminality area.

The book is split into two volumes, the first volume describes the type of women which become criminals and how they feel about their stigmatisation and treatment and the process women go through within the criminal justice system.  The second volume concentrates on the criticisms and limitations of both conventional and feminist approaches to the understanding of female criminality and suggests some new perspectives to traditional and modern theories.
