Introduction

This report covers Mirage 2000’s original specification and how it has changed during its development; the history and development of the aircraft; the configuration of the Mirage 2000; the flight controls and main systems of the aircraft; and a general arrangement drawing of it.

The report goes into as much detail as is possible from sources not from the manufacturer or operators that can be located on the library and internet.

Main Body

Specification of the Aircraft

The Mirage 2000 was created, designed and made during The Cold War. This aircraft was part of the race for air superiority which encompassed Europe, America, and Russia. The aircraft was initially designed as an interceptor. Interceptors are a type of aircraft that take off, and intercept and destroy enemy aircraft before they can cause threat, especially nuclear weapon carrying long range bombers. However as the Cold War continued the danger of nuclear bombers receded because of the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) instead. The developments of ICBMs lead to the Mirage 2000 to be adapted to fulfill a strike and attack role as well, from late Cold War to modern day.

The 2000C was the first version of the Mirage to be sold by Dassult, and it entered service with the Armée de l'Air (French Air Force- ADA) on 2 July 1984. The next of its predecessors, the 2000N entered service in 1988 as ASMP (French for medium-range air to surface) nuclear standoff; to deliver a last resort nuclear warning shot to the enemy. Then the 2000D entered service in 1993 as a conventional attack aircraft, much the same as the 2000D, just without the ASMP capability and instead with upgraded systems. In May 1997 the 2000-5 was completed which was is a multi role aircraft and again had upgraded systems. Finally in the Mirage 2000 family came the 2000-9 in 2003 as a specific upgrade for the United Arab Emirates which has long-range air-to-ground capability.

The History and Development of the Aircraft

Aircraft Configuration

As with the whole Mirage family the Mirage 2000 has low mounted Delta wing with clipped tips. The advantage of delta wings is that when the aircraft breaks the sound barrier the leading edges are still behind the shock wave. The shape of a delta wing also allows the wing to be built stronger and cheaper than a conventional wing.

The aircraft does not have conventional elevation control surfaces; instead the elevators are integrated with the ailerons to create elevons. The combination of ...
