Claude Debussy - biography and analysis of Golliwogs Cake Walk

- Music Extension Assignment - - Claude Debussy - Claude Debussy was born in Paris on 22 August 1862, and died a very unfortunate death in Paris from cancer, on 25 August 1918. He began learning the piano when he was seven years old from an elderly Italian, paid for by his aunt. From age nine he studied with a student of Chopin. Debussy's talents soon became obvious, and he moved on to be taught by some of France's best piano teachers. At eleven years of age, he entered the Paris Conservatoire. During his twelve years at the Paris Conservatoire, beginning in 1872, he studied composition with Ernest Guiraud, harmony with Emile Durand, piano with Antoine-Francois Marmontel, organ with Cesar Franck, and solfeggio with Albert Lavignac, as well as other significant figures of the time. From the beginning, though extremely talented, Debussy was also argumentative and experimental. He challenged the Academy, which was very inflexible in it's teaching, preferring instead dissonances and intervals. From 1880 - 1882, he was employed by the patron of Tchaikovsky, 'Nadezhda von Meck', giving music lessons to her children. Debussy was trained in the classical European tradition. He had the most Classical European training among the new composers of his time, and was of the most independent. He was not only gifted as a pianist but also as a composer. He won the 'Prix de Rome' for

The famous person i most admire - Legendary jazz vocalist Billie Holiday

THE FAMOUS FIGURE I MOST ADMIRE... English GCSE speech/presentation Legendary jazz vocalist Billie Holiday was born Eleanora Fagan Cough in 1915 Baltimore, the direct descendant of a slave (her grandmother) and a plantation owner (her grandfather). Born to a 13-year-old mother and a father who abandoned the family shortly after she was born, her childhood was far from stable. After being raped when she was 10, she was abandoned by her mother, and left to live with uncaring relatives. To support herself she began running errands and scrubbing floors in a brothel - it was there that she first heard jazz, scratchy recordings of Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith played on the house phonograph. At age 12 she moved to New York, where she became trapped in the brutal and bitter world of prostitution. By 1930 she had convinced a club owner to let her sing on an open mic night, taking the stage name Billie Holiday from the name of film star she admired, Billie Dove. After being discovered by musical genius John Hammond, Holiday was introduced to the producer Benny Goodman, who assisted her with her first recording session in 1933; over the next 11 years Holiday recorded over 200 cuts of jazz and swing music. Despite a lack of technical training, Holiday's unique diction, inimitable phrasing and acute dramatic intensity made her the outstanding jazz singer of her day. White

Comparing Different Musical Pieces

Compare Different types of Music Music is the way we speak, who we are, where we came from, what we feel, the things we remember, and music often communicates the things we are unable to. I have an extensive group of friends. The biggest difficulty I've noticed about this is our music tastes. Riding in the car is often like attending a court hearing over control over the c.d. player. The most common debate is usually rock versus folk. Rock and folk are two of my preferred music styles. When I'm experiencing an intense emotion, these are my music styles of choice. These two music styles are both very forceful. They both have a heavy effect on the human state of emotion. They are also both be very nude musically due to the expression of intimate topics. They can both strip an orange of it's skin for you, leaving you to taste it down to the pulp. When listening to Joni Mitchell, a legendary folk singer, I am overcome with emotion. She has such an breathtakingly unforgettable voice. Her lyrics have done noting short of sending chills down my spine. However, Courtney Love, guitarist and vocalist of Hole, is known for stirring up emotion in her music. She is very unobstructed and electric with her music style. She screens nothing when she is onstage. She lets emotion flow. I've noticed in a lot of folk music, the lyrics hold me more than the music itself. It's nice to hear a

The History of the Dj

The History of the Dj By Christopher Brawn A Disc Jockey is a person who plays out pre- recorded songs using compact discs, vinyl or tape depending on what they prefer. The music genre that the Dj decides to play out all depends on what type of crowd he's in front of and what pleasures himself. Dj's can be heard at many places including weddings, nightclubs, school parties and radio. There are many techniques to Dj'ing these are all shown depending what Dj is playing out and what type of music it is. Drum and Bass Dj's tend to chop and drop while House Dj's tend to use what's known as the original technique; blending. Scratching and juggling are two other types of mixing techniques. While these are all well known techniques, a Dj is not renowned just for carrying out these types of mixing. It takes a special edge to be recognised as an established Dj. Some Dj's have some Dj's don't. In the assignment I will be giving you four excellent examples of Dj's that have made it in the music business and telling you how they've influenced turntabalism and Dj'ing in the past 30 decades. Jimmy Saville, the former Jim'll fix it arguably was the pioneer of Dj'ing. Jimmy Saville was the first Dj to mix two records using two turntables. This accomplishment occurred in the late 1940's where the young Jimmy held discos at halls and wherever was

Music Composition Brief 1

Brief My school's music department wants to encourage students to start to learn to play instruments. To help them choose which instrument they would like to learn, students who already play will be demonstrating their skills by performing a composition. I have decided to write a composition for a violin accompanied by a piano. Compositional Process The piece is in rondo form (Area of Study 1) for a violin and piano which contains 3 sections in the format ABACA, with the A section as the returning theme, but varied slightly each time to keep the theme interesting. The piece was composed in simple time: 4/4. I chose to use this to counter the difficulty of the piano parts, where semi-quavers and quavers are played in both parts for a large proportion of the piece. The first A section was composed mostly in G major, with 4 bars in the middle in D major, the dominant key of G major. To start the piece, I created a violin melody accompanied with a piano playing arpeggios and broken chords. I made bar 8 an exception: a scale was used instead of an arpeggio in the piano right hand. I decided to do this to contrast with the other bars which were playing arpeggios. This section started off as mezzo-forte with two mezzo-piano's in the middle of the piece, as the note lengths were swapped around for one bar: usually the violin part is in crotchets, right hand piano semi-quavers and

Ratime Project

History Context When: Ragtime music started in the late 1800's . However, it did not become popular until the 1900's. In fact, it was most popular from 1897 to 1918. Although after 1917, its popularity began to be replaced by Jazz, in early 1940s, Jazz musicians started to include some ragtime music in their repertoire. Even though ragtime music is still being composed now, the most significant revivals of popular interest in ragtime music happened in the 1950s and the 1970s. Where: Ragtime music originated from America. It descended from the jigs and marches played by Afrian-Americans. Ragtime was first played Louisville by Ben Harney in 1895. One year later, it began to gain popularity in New York City and got more and more popular later on. Nevertheless, Missouri was considered to be the 'heartland' of ragtime music. According to two well-known music historians David Jasen and Gene, 'There were more rags--and more good rags--from Missouri than anywhere else.' Who: Some famous Ragtime composers were: Jelly Roll Morton, Eubie Blake, Charles L. Johnson, Tom Turpin, George Botsford, Zez Confrey, Luckey Roberts, Paul Sarebresole, Wilbur Sweatman, Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb and James Scott. Pop music composition

Solo Ballads ? BALLADS -tell stories, they have been around since at the 15th century. Back then a ballad was a long song with lots of verses that told a story. It's the type of thing that was sung by wandering mistrels. ? POP/ROCK - ballads still tell stories, they are often slow and sad and tell some kind of love story. Songwriters like to put a romantic or spooky twist right at the end to keep people listening. You will hear ballads sung in many different styles - a rock ballad accompanied by heavy drums and amplified guitars e.g. a folk ballad played on a acoustic guitar. Singer-songwriters are artists who write and sing their own material. They usually accompany themselves on either the guitar or piano and write a fair few ballads. • Bob Dylan's most famous ballad is an anti-war song called 'Blowing in the Wind'. • He sings a simple major scale, diatonic tune and plays a acoustic guitar. • All the verses are the same music and the same last line. • When the last line is repeated this works like a mini-chorus. • Elton John's 'Candle in the Wind' is a love ballad about Marilyn Monroe. • Her real name was Norma Jean. • The first line goes 'Goodbye Norma Jean....' • At Princess Diana's funeral he changed the words to 'Goodbye English Rose...' • Elton accompanies most of his songs on the piano. • His accompaniments combine rhythmic
